In 2002 my mare was pts by captive bolt. I was not given a choice but believe it was the best option as she had GS. With some sick horses when their systems are closing down, an injection can be difficult to give as the veins start collapsing, and then it takes time for the anaesthetic (it's an overdose of anaesthetic) to work, thus leaving the animal 'struggling'
