I am surprised at the lack of TV/press coverage of this large-scale rescue. Why is this? or have I just not been watching TV at the right time? When Spindles farm was happening there was live footage on sky TV, and mass reporting in the newspapers. Ive seen very little on this MAJOR rescue.

EXACTLY!!!! theres been very little media coverage of this. Near Bristol and last week. I only saw it on the 'Bristol Post' website someone shared with me on FB. Its horrendous- theres a picture of them dead in the field.......
 
Some people seem to have mental condition of wanting to collect as many animals as they can but yet they do not have the time/money/resources to look after them. Any person with half a brain would know that there is no money in breeding these horses so why do they do it?
This clearly is an illness and the people need to be treated and banned from keeping animals.
 
This isn't near Bristol it's over in South Wales around the Bridgend/Merthyr Mawr area. The only Bristol connection is that a local horse rescue organisation became involved. Its been an ongoing situation for years I believe. Only earlier this year were reports of dead horses being dumped in streams around Merthyr Mawr. I believe its believed to be a chap who owns approx 2,000 horses and is somewhat notorious. I don't know why it hasn't received more publicity - obviously x factor and strictly are more important??!! A fine example of why breeding needs to be strictly regulated and passporting enforced.

I think greed and money is more the reason behind this
 
So other people on this forum- horsey people- haven't heard about it- not just me. This is welfare, cruelty, whatever on an ENORMOUS scale. It should be plastered all over the newspapers IMO. This man, whoever he is, should be NAMED,SHAMED, and CONVICTED!!!!!
 
Amersham had huge tv/press coverage sadly such a story no longer seems shocking, most will says its Wales its therefore welsh ponies but this isn't the case this is a mixture of equines. The pile of dead ones from the pictures don't look starved so what's the story ??

Further more perhaps if its as bad as said the equine community needs to pull together again and help the charities. BUT we need more information...

There is no money in breeding horses when you invest money in their health/well being. Unfortunately if you have no morals, churn out horses by hundreds, spend no money on their care, then there probably is money in it. If you breed a horse and sell it for just 500, you think what was the point in that. But do that 100 times over and you've quickly made yourself 50k
These people dont care how many die along the way, there are always the ones that do sell. This is nothing to do with illness. This is a result of greed combined with no morals

agreed, if you put nothing into them, even selling for a few guineas is profit. He's not a hoarder, he's an *******..
 
Oh dear god when will it stop. just week after week after week. My heart gies out to the people involved with the rescue. To have to witness so many being PTS must have been dreadful. poor poor animals. But at peace now
 
It was reported on the Farming programme on Radio 4 at about 6.00 a.m. one morning last week. They reported it as being the largest case of it's kind. Unfortunately because of legal issues we will not know why the 100 out of 400 horses were put down until it has gone to court. Fortunately as a result of changes in animal legislation the welfare organisations are now able to take these people to court and get a successfull prosecution and conviction of them. It is very tragic for the animals concerned that had the mis-fortune of being owned by these people.
 
Very sad, RIP you poor beasts - at least they knew kindness in their very last moments.

I have said it before, and I'm sure I'll say it again, people need to stop buying horses and ponies from people such as this. They may think they are rescuing them but they are actually just encouraging further overbreeding. As another poster said above, these people don't give a flying fig in a high wind about the welfare of their animals, and if they can sell 100s of horses for a few quid each, with little or no upkeep costs, they have made themselves a lot of money. They also know that people will see their animals in need and it will tug on their heart strings, so they are more likely to make a sale.

Buy a horse from a reputable breeder, for a decent price, that has been treated well. If you buy a neglected horse from this type of situation, it may have all sorts of problems caused by the neglect, you have no idea of its parentage - I'm sure the breeding is often incestuous.

If these people can no longer make money from these poor, helpless, neglected animals then maybe they will think twice about owning them at all.

The situation we have ATM is truly heartbreaking. I think something drastic will need to be done - who is going to give all of these horses a home, when the charities are already full to bursting.

The Daily Fail have run two cases into one here. Evans Lloyd Evans has been mistreating his horses for years. His stock are registered under the Cricceth prefix and he has been over breeding for decades. The WPCS are aware of his offences but are keeping a very low profile about the case. People have been trying to get him stopped for years and complaints have also been made to the auction houses who sell his malnourished ponies. Although he has been banned from owning ponies his remaining stock have been put in his daughter's name and it is feared he will carry on as before when he is out of prison. There is a petition ongoing at the moment to try to get the WPCS to not register anymore of his stock and also to strip him of his life membership and his judging privileges.

(And sorry if I am in wrong section here but I am so d**n relieved this man appears to be about to get his come-uppance...) only about 20 years too late but better late than never I guess.
As a former contributor on SS I used to recoil in horror at the stories about this man, and indeed a friend of mine owned Coed Coch Superstar, who had a lucky "rescue" back home after being leased to him for 7 short weeks. He went in show condition and came home in a skeletal condition.
I cannot believe it has taken this long but Mr Evan Evans I sincerely hope they throw the book at you. (And that you rot in a similar hell you have subjected countless ponies to over far too many years.)
And the WPCS should be questioned in court regarding their lack of action for years along with all the other so called welfare societies, and last but not least Brightwells for seemingly making excuses for this so- called "human" and selling on his poor, poor ponies. Although they were the lucky ones.
How many times more must highly respected members of the WPCS and judges be found guilty of the most vile neglect and cruelty?

its just so shocking.............registering them in his daughters name so that he can go on neglecting them. how as a horse loving community can we get together and do something constructive?
 
I know a Connemara breeder that churns out tonnes of ponies. He thinks he has done the Connemara breed a favour by improving it (he actually said this) because he has produced a few top ones (HOYS). He doesn't mention the 95% of the rest average to poor quality ones he's produced. The top ones get treated like kings, the poor quality ones are frightfully neglected. If I were to breed 100 ponies I'd be pretty confident to be lucky and get a few top quality ones. People mass producing horses/ponies need to be heavily monitored and controlled to prevent these things from happening. Some get away with it by being under the guise of being the producer of a handful of top ones
 
Good god, I'm another who has not heard even a whisper about this until now. How bad does it have to be before it's big news?

Am I right that there are 2 separate cases here, Price and Evans? I hope both get what they deserve although in this country that won't be a fraction of the suffering these horses have endured.
