I managed to squeeze in a quick ride after work yesterday (yayy for the lighter evenings) and it was horrendos! she was napping everywhere and wasn't really listening to me. I was knakered, so my YO offered to get on her. Well Ruby was a different Horse :rolleyes: no napping, lovely forward going trot and canter on each rein on correct leg! I couldn't even get a canter! :mad: I know it was my riding though. I was going to wait another month or so before having lessons. But after watching how lovely Ruby went for YO, it's given me a kick up the backside to book a lesson now! Lesson booked in 2 weeks time.

I haven't had lessons in over 5 years eekkk :o But if I want a lovely schooled Horse, I am going to have to improve myself first. Fingers crossed for me! Will let you all know how I get on.
 
its easy to go rusty with no regular lessons

i am another that definitely needs to brush up on my flatwork technique as i know i have some bad habits and really need someone to tell me off and get me riding correctly again!

Good luck with your lessons :) I'm sure you'll find them very worthwhile. I've only had one lesson on my new boy and it was like he'd been swapped for a different horse afterwards. We were prancing round in a beautiful outline after our lesson :) I was so pleased with us that I had to go and have a little walk around just to make the most of how nicely he went!
 
I haven't ridden for around 7 years, and thought I would book lessons when my beginner OH had his. Unfortunately I am still too heavy for the riding school I chose (dieting madly, Ned being the incentive)

So OH went on his own.

Well! I was gobsmacked.

This 51 yo 6'2" total novice was trotting within 10 minutes, then without hands! Lost his balance a bit when he landed on his giblets, but spent more than half his 30 minute lesson trotting and fell in a heap when he got off.

Was majorly impressed with him (I was never a natural) and he hasn't stopped grinning since...but is very sore and stiff.

Judging by that things have changed in a big way. When I learnsed a million years ago, I spent weeks on a lead rein!

Made me jealous. I'd say go for it, you and your marecan only benefit.

And doesn't it make you cross when someone gets on your horse and it turns into a perfectly schooled angel?

Good for your OH! hope he wasn't too sore afterwards! Hehe. Yes I was very cross, as it just shows my mare can do it, she just chooses not too. As my YO said yesterday, I just need to find the right buttons too push. On a plus side though, my mare picked up the correct canter lead on her right rein, which she has always struggled with (old stifle injury) so just shows the steriod injections I forked out for has made it more comfortable for her. Even YO couldn't get her to canter right leg before.
 
My boy and I have a lesson tomorrow - very swanky place so feeling a bit nervous! Lovely massive indoor school so he'll enjoy that I'm sure! Have all my clean brushing boots, girth and saddle cloth drying on the line as I type...and I even cleaned my tack! That doesn't happen very often!
Going to trim and pull him tonight so he wont be best pleased with me!
 
Well done you for immediately admitting your the one at fault, sometimes its so easy to blame our horses. Also try getting someone to video you. Often you can sit back and watch exactly where your going wrong. Good luck with the lessons.;)
 
Good luck for your lesson Irishbabygirl! and your a very good student already for preparing. My tacks a bit dirty :p and more then likely she will be a scruffy mud monster too :p I don't get to the yard until 5.45 so gives me just enough time to get changed, bring her in and tack up :o I hope you have fun tomorrow :)

Cambrica, thank you. I too think that watching a vid will be useful. But I don't think I will ask anyone to video my first lesson, I am so nervous as it is, without people watching :o It's very much a case of green Horse and even greener rider :o:rolleyes: But I am looking forward to looking back, a year down the line, to see the improvement we have made together as a pair.
 
Lauranbay, thanks for the reply-only just seen it. Sounds like yours went very well indeed! Mine went well too, still a long way to go but so far so good :-)
