100 percent magnesium

I bought some from Nat Hors Supps last week,....hmmmm maybe thats why they're out of stock! Bought a few bags and got a bag of free linseed treats too!

Natural Horse supplies do not do the large 25 kg sacks of calmag that I regard as the cheap stuff, I buy from pro-earth who are cheaper than naturalhorsesupplies.

Mmmm. I see, Erin.
Then back to why is Magnitude effective with so little? Why does the Ebay magox suggest over twice the amount (of actual Mg) is required?

The stuff in you Magnitude tub is pretty much the same as the ebay MagOx (magnitude has calcium added to it too, but a tiny amount)

The 5g dose of Magnitude does nothing for my mare, she needs 3x that to make a difference to her.

Sounds like your horse only has a small Mg deficiency, and so doesn't need supplementing with much. It varies from horse to horse, some hay/grazing has more Mg in it.....

From my experience, 10g seems to be the best starting point :)

Because alot of the ebay and other suppliers are aimed at the barefoot market as well as horses struggling with spring grass and laminitus.

People have found that in these situations larger quantities have had a beneficial effect and it won't do any harm if you feed a bit too much.

Unless you actually know how deficient your feed and forage is in magnesium, there is some guesswork involved in how much to feed and it is not an exact science.

So if what you are feeding is working, then if you bought straight magox then there is no reason why you should need to feed more that you are currently feeding.

I feed 98% pure magnesium oxide from Equimins at the moment, it is a very fine powder like icing sugar in consistancy. But at £40 for 5kg it has gone up alot recently so I am looking at getting together with some other people to share a sack from taycrest chemicals as that worked out at about £6 a kilo the last time I looked.

If you really want a good Magnesium just look at the graft on this link and it shows you that Maxoxide is no good

http://www.nupafeed-uk.co.uk/index.htm?ac=GJHJS-U

I tried to find the reference for that but don't have access to it, what nupafeed state is a bit wooly imo

'This graph demonstrates the absorption rates of different magnesium salts into animals intestinal tract, showing the efficiency of Magnesium Aspartate Hydrochloride (MAH). When other magnesium salts plateau, MAH is shown to continue absorbing.

Please note that Magnesium Oxide is not included on this graph. Due to the insolubility of Magnesium Oxide, its absorption is too low to warrant inclusion. '

I think the rates bit is quite important that graph is only a over a couple of hours, it doesn't indicate the total absorption. So yes, that makes it good as an 'instant' calmer but the data shown is not relevant for those feeding magnesium as an general supplement and not wanting instant effects. If it takes 24 hours for the mag ox to absorb it really doesn't matter if you are feeding it regularly.
