Hi ,
I have seen a couple of two year olds for sale, both have lovely movement very well bred and nice to look at. Both the owners are asking 10k. I was just wondering if it is expensive or normal to pay such a high price for a very young horse. Both horses are home bred. Thanks.

Totally depends what it is....

I think youngstock prices have come right down. If it's for a dressage bred one have a look on BD classifieds in the youngstock and studs section to give you a comparison.

a horse is only worth what you want to pay for it

in my experience i wouldnt pay that for a horse - ever

Ive known people buy horses for less than 2k and turn them into fantastic dressage horses

When I worked on a pro's yard, they were discussing buying a youngster over a cup of tea one day. They were saying, "but its only £7k, it must only have 3 legs.." And that was 20 years ago!

Depends on what your budget is and what your aim is.. Remember that Jennifer Saunders TV thing where they went to Ireland to look at a dealer who sells youngsters aimed at eventing - they were around £8k..

Yes its normal there are a lot of people who pay more than that for foals so why not a 2 year old who has had more time spent onit and is showing more of how it will be as an adult? thing to remember is that most of us have nowhere nearr 10k to spend on a horse so would think its a lot of money whereas people who do have that as disposable imcome would see it as a normal price to pay for a potentially good horse. Its all down to the individual and what they think is the value of the horse.

Depends what sort of quality you are looking at.

imo, £10k is a reasonable price for a well bred, well conformed and well moving youngster that has been brought up well.

Just because I think it is reasonable, doesn't mean I can afford to buy it myself though! :)

Something well bred with other stock doing well? with high aims? yes it might well be worth it. Would I pay that? no, buts that because I do not have that money to spend on a 2 year old.. and I have had a spare £10K to go extra horseshopping it would be for another eventer to act as a schoolmaster for me..!

wouldnt ever spend 10k on a 2year old. even if i had amazing breeding. its all about what you make of it. you could spend that much and it could turn out poop.

Thanks for the replies, very mixed views!. I will go and see the youngsters in the flesh and go with my instinct. I was just wondering about the price because their are a lot of horses for sale under saddle already competing, with good breeding for 10k.

You need to be a gifted rider to be spending that amount on a young horse because it could be ruined as easily as a cheap horse. It costs a lot to breed a good horse and they should be worth that amount but few are as they are not special enough. The very best fetch more than that.

Adds like that put me off, if it SHOULD be a 10k horse why isnt it? There is a very bi gap between 10k and 3250....

Have to say untouched 4 year olds make me wary too, I always image they've tried to back them and couldn't, or maybe did back them no problem and found they weren't taleneted enough. Who knows!

Either way though, if paying 10k for a 2 year old, you could get it to four and find exactly the same! I always think you pay more for the hope value... i.e. you hope you 10k 2 year old is the next Valegro, but actually he's more likely to stop at Elementary and will never actually be worth 10k again - so you pay for the gamble!

I agree. I have had some horses in that bracket, at 3 year olds though not 2, and some have made me money and some have lost it. More made money though! I guess its all relative to what you want to do with the horse and what you are willing to pay for that horse

You must have a good eye ;0)

Another one here OP, def compare these to what you're looking at to see if you can see what's causing the price differential....!
