I am last going to view a pony!! However in his advert it said he was 125cm (just over 12 hands) but in fact they have now said he is 11 hands. So really could be anything in between is my guess. I wanted him to keep my pony company and for my children to ride, and from time to time myself to keep him fit. Is he too small for this? I am 5'4 and 50kg.

Depends on his build i'd guess. I used to exercise my friends 12hh pony who was a NF. I felt big, but looked ok and I was only keeping her fit and schooled. Go and see the pony and then make a decision xx

i ride my kids 11.2 pony every now and then, im 5ft 2 and 7 1/2 stone, i feel big, but dont look that bad , or so ive been told ! shes a stocky welsh sec A.

With sturdy little ponies weight is often not the issue, the tricky bit is the max size of saddle they could take that would restrict who could ride it. Sitting in a too small saddle is likely not only to mess up your posture but also would position your weight too far back on the pony. I would be surprised if, at your height, you could find a saddle to suit you both, unless of course you intend to keep him active by lunging and long reining him instead?
For a mother daughter share type I would be looking taller myself.

Depends on build. I wouldn't let anyone who was over 6stone including saddle on our 11.1 minix, & I think anyone over 5' unless mainly leg would be uncomfortable height wise, regardless of weight. And if just 11hh, even if its a stonking exmoor type, there's few who imo would be suited to 8stone, plus riding kit & saddle. If I were you I'd be looking at 12.2's.

Here are some photos of the two I will go and see:

The black one is the 11hands, he is being sold due to a divorce.

The pie one is from a riding school, he is 12 years old, just over 12 hands and apparently good at everything, but is more of a pony who needs a one on one home with more attention. I am unsure about there reason to sell as if he was great I am sure they would keep him, but am interested to see him anyway to judge for myself.

They are both the same price, but of course in completely opposite directions!!!

I can't see the pictures that well as on phone but I would be concerned that the piebald is wearing a martingale if he is suitable for children. As the black one is ride and drive could you keep him fit by driving instead perhaps current owner could give you some lessons if never done it before?

I like the black on too and have always wanted to learn to drive. My friend does it as a tour guide and for weddings, so could get her to teach me. The other one I like, but my concern was in all the photos they sent of him being ridden he has his ears back. Good point about the martingale!!!

Just look through the photos again and he is not wearing a martingale it is just his reins hanging down on one side.:)

Don't assume that the riding school will keep him if he is any good. We have had a couple of good 'uns that have been ex RS, they sold on as after a while a lot of horses get quite stale of being in a RS.

If you plan to show your new pony check the height restrictions of classes you are interested in such as lead rein classes as these will have a max height on them

In answer to your question I dont think you are too heavy but you coukd be a bit tall, ok for occassional riding but you may feel like you arent riding as well as you could be if that makes sense!

Have a look on the Horse Gossip forum for sale section - there are usually quite a few small ones on there

I used to have an 11hh welsh pony for my kids, we had her 8-9 years, they rode her until they (the kids were about 12 years old). I used to hop on and ride, and was about your size. Having said that she did not need much riding, I could pull her out the paddock once a week and she would be fine, i did lunge her a little before the kids got on when they were younger, rather than riding m ost of the time.

He would mainly be for my young kids to ride, I would only ride very occasionally as already have a bigger pony. Also once my kids have outgrown the smaller pony they can ride my bigger one.

No way I'd put someone your size (and once upon a time I wasn't far off!) on either I'm afraid.

But obviously you could drive the black one :-)
