I have only had my filly for a few weeks so I am just feeding her what the previous owner had her on (sugar beet, garlic chaff and a stud mix) now I hear that stud mix is high energy and I'm thinking it may be making my filly extra fizzy. She is living out right now with another yearling, grass is okay but paddock so not a huge area, she seems to be doing well on 1 feed per day, but can anyone recommend a low energy mix please if this is something she would do better on?

Whilst I'm nattering on she is extra nibbley, spesh compared to the yearling cob she shares with! Believe me I correct her constantly! Feels like I'm constantly doing it! I'm worried there may be a dental issue so getting the EDT to check her out soon. When I'm leading her she is always getting the lead rope between her teeth, worse teething than my 12mnth son!!

Thank you in advance x

My filly is saddler x section d.

As the grass comes through she could have the feed cut back, until then I would supplement with some hay as she may be hungry.
The teething sounds like normal baby behaviour as is the fizzyness, she is only a yearling and has just moved home so is still finding her way.
Has she anything in the field she can chew on, other than her companion, she may need some more fibre so again more hay.

I wouldn't feed anything other than ad-lib forage. Youngsters can develop all sorts of physical and mental problems from over-feeding, especially cereals.

If she's out on good grazing she shouldn't be hungry. Id cut out everything and get her on a youngstock balancer. I use d&h suregrow. I'm forever banging on about it to youngstock owners but I really think its the best on the market. All my babies get it til they're three. Give her a cup twice a day and nothing else. That should give her all the vits and mins she needs without the extra fizziness that she may be getting from the mix. In regard to her nibbliness, its a normal baby thing. My 2yo HAS to constantly attack the leadrope, as did my 3yo when he was younger. It's something they grow out of, along with nipping. Just continue to be firm and she'll get the message eventually. Good luck with your baby, they're lots of fun!

ETA- sorry just read that the grazing area wasn't big, if you think she's a bit hungry I'd chuck in a bit of haylage too

I stopped feeding my 10mo as soon as she was back out to pasture a few weeks back. Don't overdo it at this age, you'll pay for it later.

Agree that if you need to feed, soaked suregrow and a bit of chaff is plenty. I soak alfalfa pellets with sg back when she was still in a stable routine.

Another vote for suregrow. Both of mine (2 and 3 yo) are on it and its a good base. U know they are getting the vits etc they need so you can just change the fibre accordingly. In the summer mine just get suregrow, in the depths of winter they get suregrow, alfalfa light and speedi beet. No problems so far with growth or joints!

Agree totally with Toast and recommend Suregrow and the length of time to feed it to youngsters too.
Just because one might have gone out on good pasture does not negate making sure it gets everything it needs for growing bodies. You don't need to feed anything at all with it if your grazing is good enough but grass alone will not provide all the nutrients a growing body needs so a mug of Suregrow in its small pelleted form is ideal.

I'm another Sure Grow fan, It's made by Dodson and Horrell.

My colt is 9 months, TBx large native. He gets 2 small mugs a day. Is turned out 7am-7pm, on reasonable grazing with ad lib good hay overnight. He will go out 24/7 soon with his colt friend but will continue with the suregrow feeds.

I feed it with a very small handful of chaff and damp it well, otherwise he bolts it

Fab! Yep I think I'll mix it with a bit of chaff also. Reasonably priced as well! x
