12 stud holes per horse????

Morning!

Today, Bon Monster got her new clogs on, and I'd asked for stud holes this time - 2 in each shoe, as she suffered without them at the w/end - not like my Ludo who never had them and could jump out of and back into bog without batting an eye lid...

Anyway - got chatting about stud holes, and being a broad Yorkshire man who's hunted all his life, he isn't a fan of stud holes, but said he shoe's one show jumpers string and they all have 12 holes put in - 3 in each shoe....

my question - WHY ???

Anyone on here have that many?

I would personally be concerned about concussion with that much grip! Could kind of understand it behind, but no way would do that infront!!

Erm, no....never heard of 12 before....
Prehaps for precision grip over big courses? Need a SJ'r to shed some light on this one.
 
I've seen 3 per shoe...2 on the outside and 1 inside, or even 1 more towards the toe...but wouldn't do so myself. I use 1 per shoe in the outside only to minimise concussion.
 
yea seen 3 2 on the outside and one on the inside !!

always have 2 to stop twisting any fetlocks if you just have one onthe outside !!

You should talk to your vet and/or your farrier ! A horses leg is designed to twist slightly when it meets the ground. It's too many studs preventing that natural movement that causes the concussion and thus problems

I did, and that is why i've got 2 studs in each foot!

I do put larger on the outside in the hind feet tho.

my friends horse twisted a fetlock with one stud as the stud got sucked into the ground !! it was horrible always used 2 studs in both feet one on either side !!
 
There are many differing views on the number of studs that should be used...but what everyone agrees on is that they should be as small as possible. Twenty odd years ago most people used a single stud...now fashions have changed and people tend to use two. I was using two per shoe last year and Bo had problems with concussion. Both my farrier and vet put it down to the studs and recommended a single tiny stud per shoe instead. I would be less concerned about having two in the hinds, but fronts take all the force on landing and so should be kept to a minimum

I do think you are right trends have changed dont think i would ever consider using 3 though !!!

off topic but in your pic what show centre is that i recognise it but cant think of where it is !!!

It sounds more like your friend using the wrong type of studs rather than the number being used.

Anyway, i'll listen to my vet and you can can listen to yours...as I said...there are many differences of opinion on this one

the trends have changed, and I have used just hind studs without any in front before, plus my old horse didn't ever need them as i mentioned in the opening post.

Having ridden him for so long, I didn't ever think I'd need them with my new horse, however after our first show, it was obvious that on grass, she would. the advice of the farrier was 2 all round.

Ginny Leng never used any in the fronts when she was eventing, and there is a trend to be over cautious -> leading to many many studs... This is in teh whole of hte horse world tho - too many over rug now, too many won't hack, too many wrap their horses up and don't let them BE horses.

this is the way of the horse world now - just like in anything... Seat belts in cars, helmets etc. everyone is doing things to an extreme in some cases.

I read an interview with I think John Whittaker and he looks at the course and if in the JO there is a crucial turn he will stud according to which way he has to go.
 
Never heard or seen anyone with so many studs in, perhaps the intention was not to put studs in all the holes but to pick which one you wanted front middle or back? or is that just stupid? and as above people tend to make their own choices but i do agree with two in each foot, had a minor disagreement with farrier last time as he only put one hole in os of front. Means when i've put studs in before class and he's stood on the wagon for short time he's stood uneven.
 
there are some big name event riders who have 4 per shoe. A lot of show jumpers have lots of holes but only use 2 but like said above walk the course then choose which ones to use.
 
I only use one stud per shoe. Just once decided to use two per shoe for a jump lesson when it was raining hard. Ed landed over large oxer three legged and had fractured his radius. Vet said the type of fracture was normally caused by holding the end of a limb and then twisting the other end. In other words the foot did not twist so the bone broke. Will never use more than one stud per shoe again.
 
I use two behind (but only little one on inside) and the smallest possible, but only one stud infront. Quiet often will use no more than a road stud in front.
 
I have heard of people doing that befor, but I think it is taking it too far! My farrier told me about a Showjumper who he used to shoe for who was invited to go and take part in a comp on Ice, she had loads of studs, but it is understandable for ice! I only have 1 on each hind at the moment but might put them in front soon aswell. I tend to go with my farriers advice as he knows far more than me and is just brilliant!
 
if you look at some of the eventing pics, u sometimes see lots of studs...
i know some jumpers that stud up on a surface... bigger classes though...

i like 2 in each foot !
 
When sj groom in france we put 4 studs in two road studs in toes, and whatever required as norm in the heel

That was in grand prix classes not smaller.
 
I had a Selle Francais mare years ago, who wore two studs in each hind shoe and one in front whenever SJ outdoors, and even with these in, she could hardly stay on her feet. It was awful.

I'd bought her from a dealer so had never met the owner until one day I was at a show, and she came over and said hello. She was horrified that I only had 1 or 2 studs in per shoe as she always used 3! Two in the outside and one on the inside. I was shocked as had never heard of this before.
 
I know a few eventers that need 3 in each, generally they have cr*p flat feet and need all the help they can get!
