CC my 'Bodmin Moor Cob' is 6yo 14.1 and a half. She's just gone into a 6ft 3in rug! Its our 3rd owniversary on Thursday and when I got her, she wore a 5ft 3in rug, anyone else got a horse that gone up a rug size each winter?

Are these horses growing up a rug size or growing out a rug size.
14.1 in a 6'3" sounds incredible to me.
I do have TB's Arabs and Anglos so more familiar with a finer horse but even so, my 16hh pregnant mares are only ever in 6'.

My 14.3 cob was alwys in 6'3" rugs, and he wasn't particularly long backed either.

My current 16.1 baby is currently between 6'3" an 6'6" which is really annoying.

Hada15 HH traditional , she was never ever fat , was hard to keep weight in her as I was a teen who was never off of her horse , her ribs visible like a tb and she was 5'e when we got her she was that poor , 6 years later she was. 6'6 to 6'9 ! Fit as a race horse . My 15.2 Welsh d x appy is 6'9 in most brands at 4 years old she has so much filling out to do I dread how big she will be

15.3 - on a good day ID x TB on the finer looking side takes a 6ft9. Nothing like having a long backed mare :D although to look at she doesn't look that bad!

It is a cob thing! They grow sideways in their bones, not fat, and they muscle up on top too. My 14.3hh cob at 2yrs was in a 5'9" rug and finally stopped growing sideways at 8yrs by which time he was in a 6'9" rug. Those huge chests take up a lot of room. He only grew 1" in height.

14.2 Friesian cross, 6'3" rugs (some of which look like tutu's) - VERY wide and flat with huge shoulders and hindquarters.

Mine 14.2 cob has gone down a rug size since last year. She was in 6'3 when we first got her but with loosing weight and getting fitter she has gone to a 6'0.

Wow! I think you all must have Cobs crossed with Pythons!

I have the rather convenient situation of a 14.1 that takes a 5'6" (occasionally a 5'9"), and a 15.0 that takes a 5'9" (occasionally a 5'6"). Both are shortarses! And the loan pony is smaller, but longer, so she can borrow those rugs too, if needed.

Maybe we need to have a thread competition, for the shortest horse with the longest rug, and the tallest horse with the shortest rug! :D

Cortez, I am now picturing a Friesian in a frilly tutu. :D

My cob is 14.2 and a smidge and in 6ft3/6ft6 depending on neck cover size and chest clearance. In contrast my last horse was 16hh ISH and same rug size! It depends on the width of the horse. My cob is XXW saddle width and the ISH was medium

Native mare I had through 2013 wore my previous 16.2 ISH rugs which at 6ft 6, fitted her beuatifully (they also fitted him well too) :)

My 14.2hh cob was in 5'9 rugs when I bought him (5 years ago), was 6ft a year later and 6'3 the year after that. Thankfully he stopped at that! He just filled out as he developed muscle properly. He may have grown height-wise a bit too in that time. Other horses much bigger than him are in the same rug size. I was sad when he outgrew the 5'9s...pony rugs are often so much cheaper!

A lot of it is fitting his chest/shoulders in. Annoyingly the necks on combo rugs tend to fall over his ears!

H was 14.2 when I bought him and in 5'9 rugs so I took advantage of the summer sales to buy him a full wardrobe. Unfortunately by winter he was measuring in at just under 15.1 and was in 6'3 rugs. He was 7 when I bought him too!
