Our Mare had an accident in her field a couple of years ago she has had 2 years where she has done nothing. She is only 7 yrs old and is just not quite right, we love her to bits but have to do some thing with her as we need her stable and even if she was rideable we have no need for a 14.2. Are there people who would take on a pony like her for breeding and if so where should i advertise.

What is her breeding? What did she do before her accident? Does she have a competition record?

(You could advertise her on Horse Breeders Forum).

There are probably people who would take her as a broodmare but whether they should or not depends on many things.

Is she suitable to breed from- temperament, conformation, health other than the accident injury? Or are you just thinking about breeding from her because she cant be ridden?

Quite likely there are lots of people - maybe numpties, maybe knowledgeable- and you cannot advertise on here

She is unfortunately a little too small for what we are looking for. However, she may be of interest to people looking for recipient mares for ET or as a potential foster mare. However, again her size may be against her, unless she isn't particularly deep and is quite leggy? You may have luck contacting the big AI centres round the country and even some of the big TB studs.

Sorry if this seems like an advert, I am just asking for ideas what to do with her. We backed her as a 4 year old to produce and sell, we owned her father who we produced and sold who is now doing very well in the pony trials - eventing. He was a full connemara and her mother a TB. She had her accident just after we backed her, so she really has done nothing ! Any ideas what we can do with her as we really need her stable and we do not have any other horses that live out.

So is she being rehomed because she is no use as a riding horse or because you need her stable? If she had not become unsound, would she have a stable? Is there any reason why you just cant put her down? That might sound harsh but it is better then her ending up in the wrong home. You could always try some pony studs I suppose especially if she is papered.

Gosh, Magic, could you make ponies sound any less appealing!? They aren't all badly bred animals.

If she is only lame due to an accident, rather than her having old crock legs on a young body, then I'm sure, if she is the right type, temprement etc, then she will be the right pony mare for somebody.

I take it if you bred her you have her papers etc, so she should be easier.

Are you members of the SPSS? They advertise members ponies on the website, or as Jaxmath said, there is the Horse Breeders Forum

she could actually be a very useful pony mare for someone and sports ponies who are well bred, such as Crazymare's are in huge demand...

I would say being 7, and the cross she is makes her a very good candidate as a broodmare (as long as all other issues mentioned above are good eg conformation etc) rather than just being put down.

Also, you may find someone who would like her as a companion.

Rachel67, she sounds as though she has potential to be useful to someone for breeding, provided she is a good candidate for breeding herself - we can't know that without pedigree, photographs and probably more detail on the injury - in case it needs consideration with regard to her ability to withstand being covered naturally or to carry a foal comfortably in the last stages of pregnancy. I appreciate, however, that you were only asking here for the principles of what to consider as her options, not advertising. You certainly weren't displaying any ignorance nor were you inviting magic104's blunt response which bordered on questioning your motives, and which frankly, is unnecessarily accusatory when she shows no sign of knowing all the facts.

And magic 104, your challenge is rather an about-face, given you have tried your damnedest to silence or gainsay other forum users from asking straight questions on other threads to determine fact from fiction.

Fair comment Diggory. Just lately I have seen so many ads for ponies in their 20's only suitable for field ornaments, perhaps some light hacking. Their owners are hoping to get a few hundred pounds from them. So instead of the owners paying the knacker man to put the animal down, they want to get the last £1 from them. If it wasnt for the fact the rescue centres are bursting at the seams with unwanted horses, I would not feel so harsh about it. As it is horses are being dumped, mistreated & suffering, because owners are so bloody selfish. If this mare has good conformation, temperment & has something to contribute to the gene pool, then yes a broodmare is an option. From what I have seen the UK is full of these mares & to top it all they are sound. Also I was trying to understand why there is now an urgency to get part with the mare (or at least that is how I have read the post). As I said would the urgency be there if she was still sound? I am very sorry guys, but as much as I love my horses & I would never disrepect them, they are not the household pet. If they have no use, & I could not afford to keep them as a lawnmower then the bullet is my choice. I have seen too many horses abused, heard too many horror stories of dear old friends being sold into "loving new homes".

And no matter what you people think putting a horse down is an option, just like a companion, just like a broodmare, the last option I grant, but still an option, unless of course you are after your last £1 - Oh & I might add that there is a campaign asking people to think long & hard before breeding yet another horse/pony by the rescue centres.

I have put a horse down in the past who was not rideable and would do so again if that was the best option, but this mare is very sweet kind natured and her father should be on the british team next year,She should have had a great future too, maybe she can have a foal that will instead. She could just stay with us and do nothing but it seems a waste.
