Hi,
I have an 11.1 hh Welsh pony who has a forward girth groove which means my daughters saddle keeps slipping forward quite badly. She currently has the Hi Lite 14" Medium. It seems I need a saddle with the billets near the front to anchor that part of the saddle down, the GFS Monarch would be perfect but they only start at 15" which is too big, the only company that I have found that make a GP in 14" is Wintec and the Pony 500. It seems like people either love or hate these - does anyone have experience of this saddle? and any with a forward girth groove, did it resolve the issue?
Thanks

I had a Wintec pony 14”. It was too long for my Welsh A who takes a 14” Thorowgood saddle. It also came over the shoulders of the pony who has trouble with that sort of thing. The Thorowgood saddles come in 14” second hand, and they seem to stay put better. You can also get a 14” Thorowgood pony club which has a ring for a crupper. That really does solve the problem!!

Oh that’s interesting about the length, what a shame… there is definitely a gap in the market here. I’ve not been able to find anywhere that sells the PC Thorowgood less than 15”, new or second hand… that would be a good solution! I’ve emailed the company to find out if they still make them and where to get it. Thanks for your advice :)

Look on Facebook - there is a group for Thorowgood saddles. They come up in the pony saddles group too, and on Marketplace.

My son has the 14” thorowgood on his slender Welsh B, but only really because we couldn’t find anything better with a big enough seat as he continues to grow (trying to get full value before admitting the pony is outgrown!!). My only criticism (other than it being synthetic which is not my preference) is that the flap length is quite short- almost out of proportion with the seat. Leaves a lot of space for swinging legs! It does have a strap for the girth at the shoulder though which might suit you?

Have you tried an anatomical girth with your existing saddle?

I have a lovely 14” leather saddle now surplus due to growing child- PM if interested!
