Not being funny but.... how are you affording fuel at the moment???

I've stopped me chocolate ration, I certainly have had to drop down to two bottles of Sherry a week and we're only eating poor peoples chicken these days but I'm seriously thinking of breaking the nag to harness and driving to work - cheaper to feed if you've got a good do-er (sorry tb owners - bad luck... keep the gas-guzzler)

I am there with you!! We are lucky enough to have half an acre with our house so I figure I could keep one of the ponies here overnight and then alternate them so they all get some work. I fancy a saddle chariot for when there is just me and then a small trap for if I need space for the girls.

I've thought about it too, so has OH. We have a lad who is perfect for the job and he'd love it. Bum's wide enough to get respect from any traffic.

I'm very glad I bought a 3.5 tonne horsebox that does 34mpg with horse in it!

Not sure what car to buy now, as up until recently the emphasis seemed to be on emissions and fuel economy, so was going to buy a fuel efficient diesel. But apparantly these are now the latest public enemy number one, so I don't even know if I should do my bit and avoid diesel busses!

The mini Shetland I have on loan came complete with harness and cart so I am thinking very seriously of using it, any one know how much weight he can pull?!

Other than the fact daughter's school is off a roundabout on a major main road, it's be tempting to take a pony to school (I drive her mostly as there's no pavement our end of the journey + a lot of traffic). There's even 2 paddocks, sitting empty, right opposite school, and a livery yard adjacent.

Ooooh I see a business opportunity!!!!

I've been thinking much the same thing and with a couple of outgrown kids ponies kicking around at the moment, maybe this is the way forward! Just have to persuade the local tesco to install a hitching rail and cart bay.

I used to regularly go to work by Saddlechariot at my last job :D

Sadly Penny isn't old enough - but watch this space!! I am sure that someone will do it and many will follow.
How to convince Tesco/Asda or Co-Op to install hitching rails/ corrals?

Is anyone else thinking of 'To the Manor Born'?

Where would you put the car park ticket?

BTW, I have a harness and 2 old wood carts if anyone's up for collecting them......

We regularly go to the bakers or the post office with a carriage. Good to get the horses used to the traffic. We tend to get some funny looks, but so what :p

loving these stories... well I broke mine to harness just a few weeks ago and throroughly enjoyed it. We may become a permanent fixture in Bath!! He he:D

We should organise a protest rally at drive to the nearest Tesco with "Real Horsepower" emblazoned on the carraiges and a big up yours to that thick chancellor...

The fuel prices are bonkers aren't they! I've got a Discovery which I need for the trade stand, moving rolls or fabric around, pulling trailer etc, but am seriously thinking of sitting down and working out the sums to see whether a 2nd hand titchy car would be an idea as well. I wonder what the cross over point is in terms of paying for it, insurance, tax and repairs would be. Although I love and adore my Disco its never going to the most economical car, sigh.

I'm trying to combine journeys as much as possible to keep the mileage down

I'm seriously thinking of going down the cooking oil road and doing half and half with diesel in my Disco. I know pony would love to be pulling a little cart but the traffic here is mental

My OH and I have considered this, as we drive our irish cob. We did wonder how long it would be before you would have to have road tax and insurance though!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)
