Not at all...my husband is 6ft 4 and learnt to ride on a 14.3hh Quarter Horse, his Quarter Horse is 15hh and hopefully will make 15.1hh but he will look fine on her.
Please excuse lack of hat and sensible boots, he hopped on this horse (15.1hh Quarter Horse) unexpectedly but I think it illustrates that he looks fine on her:
OP I know exactly what you mean. Im sure a horse of this size would carry you no problem but I have to admit, i am about 5'7 weigh 9.6 stone and I wouldnt buy anything smaller than 16hh as I wouldnt feel it was 'enough horse' for me! Its entirely personal preference. I recently rode out for 2 hours on my friend's highland pony who is about 13.2! I knew he could carry me fine but I felt silly!
Heres me on my 16hh horse. When I bought her I was worried she was too small and even got the vet to measure her! However I now think she is the perfect size for me but would not go smaller than her.....
ps. I have fairly long legs but my I had my stirrups crancked up for a gallop round the stubble!
I'm 5'7" and 12 stone. My biggest horse is 16hh and she carried me happily up to Inter I level.
My little Orlov x is just over 15.2hh and most people think she is bigger than the 16hh.
My homebred 5yo is currently around 15.3hh. I've been careful about building up her fitness but she was backed by a man and has had no problems with rider weight.
I have a 15.1 TB mare and yes I must admit she feels really small, I don't feel silly as in thinking I look big on her or worry about my weight or anything daft like that, just find her little and choppy to ride and feel like I'm miles away from her (as in perched on top) but she is rather down hill anyway, I prefer much bigger horses to ride.
I'm 5'6 and a fraction under 9 stone.
If I was buying another horse, I'd only buy something over 16.3, it's a shame my gelding didn't turn out bigger, he's only 16.1 but he's ID/WB so he's more chunky and rides like a bigger horse.
