Would you think the rider is too big?

My reason for asking is that I went to see a gorgeous 16hh Hannoverian x Thoroughbred but dainty mare that is everything that I'm after, but I'm used to riding big 16.2hh horses and bigger. I didn't feel too big on her at all but didn't take anyone with me to give their opinion on height.

If you've got any photos, please post :)

No not too big at all!
I'm 5'11 easily and went show jumping on a 15.3hh the other week, and ok I was a little big on him but it didn't affect my riding or his performance.
I'd say 5'8 on a 16hh would be more than fine especially as you didn't feel too big. Buy her!! :D

My girl is 16.1 hh & I'm 5ft 8 I think I look just fine on her . I wouldn't have anything bigger too much horse to bring together :D

If you felt fine, chances are you look fine too. Unless she is exceptionally narrow or has the depth of girth of a 14hh pony, I can't see what the problem is. But what do I know, I'm 6' 1" and my tallest horse is 15hh. Has the barrel size of a 17hh sport horse though, got to love a Quarter Horse!

You'll be fine.
Jockey Joseph O'Brien is 6ft tall but folds himself up into racing position, no problem. He not only look fine, he is so effective, he wins!
Height is not a problem, it's weight, balance and technique that could cause a horse problems, I'd have thought.
PS I'm 5ft 9in and rode a 15.1hh Welshie very happily!

I'm 5ft 10 and ride a 15.1hh welsh cob! I think i do look a little tall for him but i keep telling myself he might grow another inch ;)

I'm 5'9". My horse that I have just lost was a half shire x cob and stood at a stocky 15.2" - I never had a problem on him or on his half sister half shire x new forest type who only stood 14.3". I'm currently riding a 17HH at my local stables - the biggest horse I've ever ridden and he feels like a moutain - heaven help me if I ever come off and I'm light years from a mounting block - I'll be hopping around for ages. I'm sure 16HH will be fine!

A couple of my eldest daughter, 5'10 on her 16.1 hh (with shoes!) full TB. Am sure you'll be fine :)

I'm 5'8, and normally I like big horses (my main three are all 17hh to 18hh, I've not bought something smaller than 17hh for yonks!) but I did buy a little 15.2hh TB who is very fine and dainty. I never felt big on her at all. Sadly she's now retired due to blindness, but I never ever felt too big for her.

It's more about weight, technique and whether the horse takes up your leg. One of my liveries is 14hh but I ride her regularly because she takes up my leg and rides like a 16hh horse.

I'm 5'7 (and fat) on Poppy, she's just a smidge under 16hh

Oh my last ride was a 14.1 gypsy cob, no judge ever said i was too tall

I'm 5"8 and Foxy is 16.1 and I think we look fine :D
I also had a go on my new new forest the other day who is 13.1/.2 ish and I didn't look as ridiculous as I thought I would :p

Thankyou... This has made me more confident!

I will be going back to see the mare :) hopefully with someone who can take a photo for me.

I'm around 10stone, but when I was riding fit I was 9stone (haven't ridden properly for a year). I'm fairly competent rider so don't think my riding would hinder the horse much.

Woah there Ruby, what is this 'fat' thing? You look fab. Why are us/we (not sure which it is!) women so hard on ourselves?! And your horse looks just my lovely Appaloosa I had when I was young.

I'm 5ft7 and I ride a 15.2 Clyde X and also will be riding a 15.2 heavy cob next week, I wouldn't really want anything bigger in height. I have lost a lot of weight but have more to lose so I always look for bone density as well as height

Im 5'8" and i dont think i look big on either of mine one's 15.1 and one is 15.3 to be honest they are cobs but I've ridden my friends scary tb who is 16.1 and i apparently didnt look too big and im not a sparrow.

You'll be fine!

I'm a smidgen under 5'8" and my horse is bang on 16hh and on the fine side of medium. If I'm honest, if he was any other horse I'd want another inch or two, but then I'm a bit on the heavy side! The important thing is whether you're comfortable.
