HELP!!! I have a 5 year old 18.2 (what should have been) county level heavyweight show hunter. He has the most gorgeous temprement and loves his work and his hacks. We got him to produce as just backed and broken at the end of last summer. On schooling him very occasionally you could see he is slightly short behind. He had what looks like a slightly rounded fetlock joint on his hind which we had xrayed...

To our complete devastation we found out after the xrays came back that he has major bone changes in his fetlock joint and sesamoid bones. We did more investigating and found out his breeder had shown him (and won heavyweight foal) at the national hunter as a foal and he had cut himself quite deeply over this fetlock joint and rather than call a vet and get him antibiotics it was just taped up, sealing all the infection in to destroy his joint!!!!

What I want to know is we are moving to a much smaller yard and have current show horses taking up the spaces. I am at a loss with what to do with him. The changes in his joint are not progressive. He can appear short behind sometimes but this is mechanical (he just can't flex the joint as much) as opposed to dire pain. One bute a day and he appears sound this just relieves the stiffness. He also cannot stand in for too long as he rests the foot and gets pins and needles so when you walk him out he looks awful then three strides later he is fine again.. He also has to be shod his feet are to wide and he is too heavy to be barefoot...

I really don't know what to do with him.. I want someone to have him that will give him a life... he has too much to give to be in a paddock for the rest of his life and he is not bad enough to be put down.... Also I don't want someone who wont care and will push him too hard... I have also been told not to loan him but sell him for a nominal fee.... So any suggestions please help!!! I'll have an ask round here as may know someone who would have him, big horses that are quiet to hack are always in short supply.

I can see them and he looks gorgeous. Sorry to hear about his problems though - personally I would loan him and heavily vet the home so you can keep tabs on him.

Keep him and hunt him. Then, and only then, sell him to someone who you trust 100% will not pass him on.

We have a true 18hh HW on my yard that's hunted by his female owner - and is a true gentleman.

However, it's probably the case that your horse is going to take money, time and patience to keep in one piece - And I would only pass him on reluctantly (if at all).

He looks lovely - what a shame his previous owner didn't look after him properly. I would have thought you would find a nice home for him - sane/safe/sensible are hard to come by - would have thought he would appeal to a few people. Good luck with finding him a new home.

Thank you all.... He is absolutely lovely....I must admit 20 years in horses and i sobbed like a baby when my vet told me...what an absolute needless waste of a horse...

I think what my friend was saying was just if someone took him and caused him major problems then sent him back even worse if all that makes sense.

What an absolute stunner! I really wish that I had a bit of cash since I would have him in a flash. I shouldn't think you would have too many problems finding a home for him given that his problems are not progressive. He really is lovely!

He is and thank you. Ironically my friend suggested I let him go for £750 this is a tenth of my final payment for him when i bought him...she thought she was being funny i guess lol... We paid £9000 for him all in.....

Id say loan, possibly with intention to sell, that way you can vet the people who you have him on loan too, and their facilities and intentions etc and make you own assessment of whether or not you think they would make acceptable owners (in your mind) for a horse this lovely!

Such a shame though as he is such a stunner!

He looks absolutely stunning! I would loan him to be able to keep an eye on him, with his looks and nice temperament it should be possible to find a good, caring home (not all loan stories are horror stories).

Oh he is a stunner and want

If only I had the funds

I would probably hack him over the summer and start hunting him in the Autumn and generally have fun, maybe hunter trails etc.
I would probably say that he is to good to go to happy hack home really. Can he jump? And does the stiffness wear off when he is worked?
Good luck with him

He looks lovely, such a shame about what his previous owner did. I also would suggest loaning him, with a view to buy, at least that way you can keep an eye on him.

Good grief, he is the spit of my horse, by Darcy Dancer,
just a little bit bigger, if only I could free up some space at mine I would love another, never had a horse like it!

Sorry nothing else to add really

How about getting in touch with the IDHS(GB) see if any of the members are interested in giving him a good home. People looking on that site are true draughty fans and I'm sure you'd find an experienced loving new mum/dad for him who loves the breed.

I would do but unfortunately there is a story to that.... One of the people who runs the IDHS was the person who owned his mum and sold her in foal (with him) to the woman who wrote him off....she would be broken hearted if she knew.. I obviously have to be careful what names I use.....

Sorry to hear that rushyj. Having said that I have bred a couple of RIDs myself and although it wouldn't be good news to hear about what had happened to him if I'd bred him I'd be glad that his current owner was thinking of his best interests for the future. Hope you find him a suitable home very soon.

Broken hearted maybe, but its not slander if you are stating facts surely?

No I know but the showing world is a very small one so I tend to err on the side of caution..... Bless him he is galloping round the field with my 3 year old at the moment trying to put his tail up in the air but it is too heavy!!! lol
