Has anyone else ever known this to happen! Our 7 yo Labrador has recently suffered from pretty whiffy breath and a lot of plaque has built up on her molars. We give her big rawhide chews to help clean them and they are being devoured without any trouble in minutes as usual but teeth still remained manky.

So, she goes to vet for a dental clean and we discover they removed 18 teeth including all but two of her perfectly clean and healthy looking front /incisor teeth!

We were warned perhaps 1-2 might be removed if required.

We are furious!

I have lost faith in vets of late -more interested in making money than doing the right thing.

Unfortunately it can happen. You cannot know exactly what will need to be taken out until the dog is under GA. I have seen vets take out the problem teeth, only for the ones next to them become loose once it has lost its surrounding support. Some teeth may also look like they will cause a problem a few months down the line and be taken out too. We had a dog in recently that the vet thought it would only be 5-6 teeth taken out, turned out it was 20!

Sorry if this isn't going in the right place or not, but our dog just had 15 teeth removed this last weds, and while I wasn't upset I don't know how long to leave her on canned food? The vet did suggest that she try to go back to her normal food "as soon as possible" but when is that?? Quite frankly I was amazed she could ever eat hard food again with 15 teeth missing?!?!? She is rat terrier/chihuahua mix if that helps :-) I don't want to introduce food too soon??? Thank you in advance for any suggestions!!!

You should have been phoned for permission if more teeth needed removal than was warned.. I would have a word with them about that.

This is an old thread, but I think you can reintroduce hard food a day or two after the op, just see how she does.

It's such an old thread I don't remember what has been mentioned on it or not, but to begin with why/how dogs can eat hard food even though they have teeth missing, it is because dogs usually saves chewing for gnaw bones. When you feed dry food it's more that they might bite down on some pieces of the food while transporting it backwards to swallow it. Also, the roof of a dog's mouth is bony, and sort of ribbed, which I've heard helps when they're missing some teeth.

As for when to start giving hard food again, 2019 when Jonna had to remove a tooth, my veterinarian recommended to give soft food for around a week or so, but I've seen replies on HHO saying it's also okay to continue feeding dry food as usual after teeth removals (for those who feed that).
Perhaps have a look to see how your dog's mouth is healing, and if it doesn't look too sore, try adding a few bits of hard food in the next feeding, and see how it goes.

Your vet should have advised you, as your dog may or may not have stitches. I would call them if you are not sure.
But I normally advise soft food for at least 5-7 days after teeth removal. Possibly longer (7-10 days) if stitches are involved.

Dogs have about 42 teeth, and most dogs can still easily eat dry food with no teeth.

My staffie went in for a couple of teeth out, they had to remove 10, apparently the surrounding teeth became loose as their diseased neighbours were removed. I was told soft food for a few days, bought expensive pouches. Then less than 24 hours post op found her happily sitting in the middle of the kitchen surrounded by the remains of a large branch that she had dragged in and was happily destroying. I took this as her telling me that she needed something crunchy.
