I need your help pls peeps...

Yestreday I did a 12k run and the terrain was A LOT rougher than I thought (Imagine rutted animal tracks that have been puddled up in the wet then dried rock solid!) sheer ankle twisting for over an hour :( anti-fun

Still the saving grace is I completed but now I have CANKLES!!!!! :( :( Hardly any definition between ankle and calf they are so filled :( Turned horses out this am and when I got home realised I was clicking (like exracers when they first come off the track and are so tight behind their hock ligaments click!)

So how using you equine knowledge can you slightly adapt it and advise me what to do with my sausage legs when I get home?... pls I'm in agony and look v odd when trying to get down the stairs :(

I have deep heat, ice spray, tubigrip, and plaster tape on hand if needed oh and a good old bag of frozen peas so what do you suggest?...

Thank you from limpy of wiltshire x

You sound like you have it covered really, I would alternate hot and cold therapy to get the circulation going and drain off fluids.....Is there are helpful someone who can give them a bit of a massage?? Or a local spa - the bubbling of a spa would help loosen and shift the fluid :)

Failing that I find choclate and wine are excellent remedies for most things :)

Do exactly what you'd do to a horse! Cold therapy, pressure bandage. save the deep heat for when the swelling has started to go down. As you'd do with a horse, it is probably best to do some gentle walking to keep the circulation going and encourage the swelling to subside rather than strict "box rest". And if they are still like that in a day or so, go do the "vet"!

shotgun?

sorry but you got 3 horses to do 12km????????? ;) :)

hot bath, electric blanket(not at same time!) plus a massage which is probably best idea and keep it moving little but often.

4 weeks ago I tore the ligaments in my ankle and it's still swollen now!

Keep your ankles above your heart to get the swelling down and do lots of toe wiggling in this position! Ice for 20min every 2 hours! put tubigrip on to help reduce the swelling (I bandaged too tight and ended up with tiger print bruising!)

and REST REST REST!!! I didn't and I'm still suffering now!!! If you were a horse I'd have you on box rest so I think you should substitute "box" with "sofa" and turn on Jeremy Kyle!!!

Definitely ice and gentle walking. How about some witch hazel and arnical gel for good measure too, brilliant stuff. Agree with all of the above, although I'm not sure about Halfstep's suggestion of "doing" the vet. Not sure how that will help? But I suppose that would depend on how good looking he is?!!!:D

Cripes thanks everyone you are all v medically minded or accident prone can't decide ;)

ATM am at work and I can almost feel them getting fatter under the desk keep getting up to make tea go to the loo get water and generally wander about as they are getting stiff

JoG - You really wouldn't be impressed if you saw the wheezy sweaty lump that made it over the finish line! ;) all the way round I was telling myself this is just a 1/4 of the ldn marathon think of those runners, and I tired to channel the spirit of Eddie Izzard to keep me going but I think it made me just want an icecream (if that seems baffling see Eddie Izzard marathon man - great documentary where he ran something like 40odd marathons in 50 days!)

Halfstep - uuurgh I hate going to the 'vet' :(

kick_On - If the rest ice and walking doesn't work I may well try your electric blanket in the bath cure! ;)

KitC - Hhhhmmm when I get home and after I've done the horses will stick them in the air and get some ice on it, then tubigrip myself up, thanks for the tip. The right one is strating to go a little blue I'm hoping it won't bruise....gah

HAHAHAHAHHA only just saw that typo....well......if all else fails....although I'm not sure he would find me and my cankles too appealing! hahhha ;)

ooooooooooo, nasty Chloe, lots and lots of water, i'd give you some epsom salts to help shift the fluid, you are probably v dehydrated too, get some of that re-hydration solution from boots, as that will help to shift the fluid off your legs! boo hiss!

lots of cold hosing! I used to take ice baths when i did marathons, not pretty but they worked, sadly they are most effective as soon afterwards as possible....so you maybe off the hook!

Hope it subsides soon, just keep wiggling your ankles under your desk and don't sit still for too long (if it is just fluid!) it should shift pretty quickly, have you any flight socks?? May look slightly random at work however!!!

How on earth did you run a marathon? I was thinking 'how can people manage this?' as I was hobbling my way round 12k let alone 26miles!!!

I am wiggling them but they are strating to tingle now, will ice as soon as I get home, have come to work in flip flops as can't stand putting anything tight on them but now thinking that all that has done is give them room to expand!!! Am drinking pints of squash to rehydrate, hhhmmmm did have some flight sock thingys left over after I ahd to go under general anesthetic once.....I wonder where I put them.....tubi grip may have to suffice if I can't find them....... thnks for the advice :)

with A LOT of training....it was well dull after the 2nd one, loved actually running the marathons, London was ace, but New York was really serious...not funny outfits or banter....;-( but could have done without the 20 mile training runs at w'ends and about 40 - 50 miles in the week!! Jeeees, i don't know how i did it!

Keep up the fluids, you'll be right as rain soon, do you know a reflexologist? that'd do the trick! & find some magnets (not of the fridge variety...lol!!!) x
