Having had my first horse for 3 months, we are entering our first show next week. My daughter will ride her in best lead rein with me leading.

Pony is 18 yrs and 14hh. As far as I know she has never been to a show before, and neither have I (I'm 36). She is a cob, passport says skewbald but she looks black and white other than small amount of chocolate brown on her nose. Not much feather so her legs are neatly trimmed and mane is pulled and will be plaited.

I dont know know what else to enter in to, or what we need for each. It's a local show so I believe not as strict as they can be.

am thinking best veteran, best combination and maybe best novice but I'm not really sure what I will need to do for any of them!

can anyone help?

I'd probably just do the classes you have suggested, I assume they are in hand otherwise you will need an individual show planned out? There will probably be coloured classes you can enter too. The best thing is you have a child with you so gymkhana!

There is always best turned out and novelty classes like prettiest mare, pony the judge would most like to take home, longest mane and tail, family pony etc.

Best advice I can give is know your pony is clean and well turned out, then relax and enjoy your show whatever the results, my first in hand show last year was no fun for anyone, showzilla wasn't even close to me that day, everything had to be PERFECT, both kids and horses did well, but at what cost, second show, I took a step back, relaxed (after my daughter god bless her, had a word in my ear) and we all had a fantastic day, moral of this tale, Relax and enjoy

I would have a chat with the secretary's when you get their and ask their advice about which classes to enter. I did this a couple of years ago when my daughter went to her first show, they were very helpful. Also when you get their go for a good wander round with the pony so she can have a look at everything and take it all in. Most people are very helpful and you can ask the judge after your classes for feedback if you're not sure about anything. Most importantly breathe, smile and enjoy it. xx

I'm sure there will be lots of classes that they can enter, but do check about the specific 'lead rein' class as most shows would say that at 14hh the pony is too big for a lead rein class....But if your daughter is a novice they probably won't object to you being on hand in other classes.

The important thing is that you all have fun, that way your daughters confidence will soar and you'll soon be ditching that lead rein altogether
