1st post here - Which breed?

I wouldn't recommend a GSD in that situation, no.
What about a Corgi? (will accept brownie points from Annette4 later :D) or Schnauzer, or Whippet?
I also agree Staffs make great family pets.

Oh I hate sounding negative but.......

Dont like Corgis, Schnauzers or Whippets :(:( Sorry

I do love staffs but everyone has one and am likely to get some idiot want to get theirs to fight mine. Seen it happen to so many friends dogs. Unfortunately its the area I live in

I had a beautiful staff x, tall through the leg like a lab but still with a staffy head. He's the most loving dog you ever met (I know his owner now) but I know what you mean about the tag. However if you met the right dog don't let that put you off. Every well behaved lovely staffy you meet with a normal owner, is one flipping the press opinion on its arse :)

How about a boxer? I have no knowledge, maybe someone else can help but my mum had two when she lived in Milan - Rhonda and Olivia and they were wonderful, chilled out dogs :)

The lady who rented the flat before us had a rescued Staff called Datchet and he was just gorgeous!!! 1 year after moving out the dog had gotten lost and the dog warden returned him to us as we were now living at his registered address. Unfortunately (for us) our landlord managed to contact the owner and she came over to pick him up but for the hour we had him, he was well behaved, loved our daughter and brought a warmth to our flat. It felt very empty when he left.

Never heard of them :) You do sound like you'll be a lovely home for the right dog.

I like you lived in a flat when I first had my JRTs (a defining factor in me getting JRTs) Vizlak is right in saying they need housetraining and its hard with them when the garden is not accessable (however we did it) I was really careful with them as puppies, after reading the horror stories of nippy, yappy and scrappy JRTs. My two are the joy of my life now and are quiet, gentle and good with other dogs (if anything one is a bit scared) and i would trust them with nippers no problem.

Not that I'm suggesting one for you per se, but just to prove you can take a dog which some people struggle with and make it work for you with patience and training :)

Aw what a lovely thing to say Kitsune and you put a big smile on my face!

We are definately animal lovers!!

My Mum has always had dogs (although now her business is cat breeding). She used to manage a very well known kennels in Shepperton and she did a lot of obedience back in the 80-90's so growing up I was always surrounded by dogs. We had a range of dogs. 2 GSD's, 3 Border Collies, 1 Sheltie, 2 JRT and a Weimeraner!!!! When we were kids, me and my friends used to take the Collies and Shelties for walks over the country park for hours! We would take little bowl and buy a bottle of water from the shop on our way with our pocket money.

It has felt weird these last few years without a dog and at the weekend our daughter was playing with my MIL Collie. She was throwing a ball for the dog and really giggling. We have a huge touring caravan which we also take away and it just seems right now to make our family complete and to get a dog.

I have no idea why I have lost a bit of trust in dogs. My Auntie had 4 Rotties at her stables and they would follow us around all day and I wouldnt bat an eyelid. I wouldnt go near that many Rotties now without having my witts about me. I guess that could be called sense that has come with age lol!

Ok, so after speaking with you guys I have on my list

Border Terrier
Lab
Staff

anymore??? :D

Got to be a greyhound every time for me :D www.grwe.com - I am constantly preaching the word, and am delighted that 3 or 4 people on here have got rescues from them now :D

Greyhounds are THE most fantastic pets :) They are incredibly easy to have around the house, everyone thinks they will take up loads of space but they really dont :) They are really laid back and quiet at home, and they are brilliant with children (I have no children so my three never meet them, but all 3 have been fantastic with my young niece and nephew from the word go :))

They do not require loads of exercise, mine have a hoon around the field a couple of times a day and sleep for the rest of the time :D I couldnt recommend them more highly :)

Some lovely dogs there. Will mention to OH. Thank you :)

I have just text Landlord to ask the question as to whether we could get a dog...eeek. I am a chicken when it comes to these sort of things, hence the text! Landlords know me well so he is probably having a right laugh at me now.

I mentioned that it would be a small dog ie Staff or Border Terrier.

Please send lots of good luck vibes. I would love him to say YES!!! x

Lab all the way, ideally from rescue but if not, well health tested. Fit in perfectly imo, the showbred ones being more lazy as well!
Or a border, but they can be a little stubborn at times, but lovely dogs.
You sound like you have your head screwed on anyway. I personally wouldn't recommend a boxer, v. bouncy and can be mouthy-not great with baby! Never mind health probs.

My mum used to breed boxers when me and my sister were little? They were absolutely fantastic with us kids, we could do absolutely anything with them, and they would protect us too :) No health problems back in those days :)

OH has 2 boxers on his dog walking tem, they are bothfantastic natured and extremely well behaved with impeccable manners, fab in the house, fab off lead and fab with other dogs, I def think with boxers, the owner will def predict the way the boxer turns out, they can be mad as hatters but in the right hands make very nice pets.

I love boxers. Lovely lovely dogs.

It may be worth contacting Cayla (above), as she has plenty of dogs needing re homing, and sometimes pups too.
