I am looking at the possibility of putting my NF mare in foal. It will be a first for both of us. I have been investiagting it alot, and my new ponys old owner recons its something an owner shouldnt miss!!

Any tips? suggestions? Im not going to rush into it, she is 16 this year and would be looking next year sometime, i know there is a possibility that she may not take!

My advice would be:

1. Make sure that you can happily loose a minimum of 2.5-3K getting your mare in pregnant and getting a foal on the ground (or not as in my case).

2. Make sure that you have the right environment - ie. you won't be able to turn it out with the rabble.

3. You will need good grazing, a stable, time off when the foal is born and someone to help you generally.

3. Find someone with experience to help you assess your mare, and help you find a nice stallion.

It's a very, very exciting road to go down.

i agree, i started thinking about it jan 2006. i took on the lease on my own yard as i did not want a foal at livery. looked at endless amounts of stallions. i also have found a brilliant vet and stud manager who took all the stress out of for me and read books till i was cross eyed. we are lucky she took first time and i must tell 2-3 people a day i am very excited i don't know how i am going to last till next year
