2 Days on. She's not coping very well

Two days since my little JRT was spayed and she's not much brighter.

Yesterday after the 24hr injection had worn off she was really shaking and wide eyed.

I thought it would be a bright idea to put her on my bed to sleep as this is one of her favorite places.. turned back for 2 minutes and jumped off, causing a big yelp

... so back to the crate wrapped up in a jumper, more shaking.

This morning she has rushed out into the garden and thrown up at the same time having diarhea (sp). She is eating her normal food now so I am hoping its just the effect of the drugs.

I spoke to my friend who is a vet nurse and she said that getting more pain killers is probably a bad idea as she will feel better than she actually is and might run around ..

I had my girl speyed a couple of months ago and she was traumatised to say the least. She cried for the first night then she refused to move at all cos it obviously hurt too much. My vet told me to give her a small dose of metacam to help with the pain and encourage her to move.
It was 3 days before she was more like normal and then of course we had to try and keep her quiet

I was certainly glad when it was all over.
 
It's only been two days, she is gonna feel sorry for herself. You would too if you'd had everything taken out

Good that she's eating though, has she had any solid poos?
 
When my Springer was spayed she just wouldn't stay still! I don't honestly think she noticed that she had a been cut up! Except that there were some funny bits of string that needed pulling out of her belly

I remember having to take her for a lead walk the day she came home from the op and she pulled like a train...

Funny how different dogies cope.
 
Don't mean to frighten you but keep an eye on her. We had our spaniel spayed a few years ago, she was about 6/7 yo. Can't remember why but she was spayed on vets advice. She came home and everything was fine, a couple of days later though she just wasn't right, and was panting a lot. I rushed her back in and they kept her. I got a phonecall next morning to say she hadn't made it

Vet said that she had an infection in her fallopian(sp) tubes, he said sometimes they flush them out when they spay dogs, but hers had looked fine when he had done it so he hadn't bothered

I've never forgiven him, and although we still use the same practice, I will always request it's not him if its one of my pets, although he does still sometimes come to the farm animals.
As I said, not trying in anyway to scare you, and she's probably just taking her time to get over the op, but just keep an eye on her.

Just called the vet as she was sick again and terrible runny poo in her crate.

They think it's an allergic reaction to the anaesthetic. Basically told me to starve her for 24 hours and then give her small amounts of boiled chicken and rice.

If she isnt drinking I need to take her in. How do I tell if a dog is dehydrated ??

I dont really want to starve her but I guess I have to do what they say ..

I know you must feel guilty about starving her but it might help her to feel better in the process by making sure there's no pressure on her insides if that makes sense.

I hope she feels better soon, poor little thing

Ok thanks, done that. It goes down quite slowly on her shoulder but quicker on her back.

Her nose is dry too. I just offered her water and she licked her lips and turned her head away.

..... argh!!
 
Try putting a little salt and sugar in the water - like doggy diarolyte.

I suppose you could try very weak oxo to make her drink too. Not gravy though, it's best to stick to clear liquids with an upset stomach.

She has been having goats milk as she wont drink water, I figure it's got water in it?? She is used to it and has her biscuits soaked in it normally.

I went against what the vet told me and gave her some boiled chicken rice, just a small amount. She hasnt eaten for 24 hours anyway and she was really hungry.

It has stayed down and she is asleep now so fingers crossed.

Do you think she still needs the sugar/salt water??
 
Poor little mite. I hope she soon feels better; it's such a worry when they're ill

sorry to hear your little one is poorly following the op, I am sure she will be better very soon.

the reason they tell you to starve them for 24hrs is to allow the guts to rest and recover, it also allows any iritation to settle enough to work properly. She will survive for quite a few days without food so dont worry about her not eating, it would be better for her insides to have a chance to recover. She will however need fluids, and with regard to the salt/sugar water be very carefull as you can put too much salt in and that is just as bad as not drinking. If you speak to the vets they can give you some powder to make up for her to drink, my jrt puppy had some when he was poorly a few months ago, he loved it and it really helped solidify his poo.

With regard to the pinch test, do it on the back of your hand and see if her skin goes back in the same timeframe. if its quite a lot slower she's dehydrated so again would speak to your vets.

best of luck and remember if you are at all worried call the vets who did the op, they are obliged to help as they did the op and should not charge you any more to check her either.
 
Another way to tell if they are dehydrated is to run your finger along her gum line.... If it is slippery she is ok, if they are sticky then she needs fluids.

Hope this helps. I was told this by a forum vet and it helped lots for me as my pup was very fluffy and I could not see her skin

2 days on from your last post and I hope that your JRT is picking up at last.
One of our dogs reacts badly to anything chemical - flea spray and anaesthetic included so I know what you have been going through.
My daughter had her lab spayed and I'm sure that the dozy dog didn't notice and just wondered why she had been crated
