just out of interest does anyone keep either 2 shetties in the same stable?? or like a horse and a shettie in the same stable??

when abby came up for me to try a wee cutie came with her for company called daisy. she was a tottie wee pony and abby's owner thought they could stay in the same stable over night (large stable) i refused and thought it was too dangerous

what do u think??

When i went on holiday there were 2 horses in teh same stable! And like horses!!!!!!! Stevie and Lou

And wehn i went back a year later they were stil there...!?

My two old standard shetland girls share a 11 x 13 ft stable. They never fight and although I always put in two haynets they mostly share one. They are really sweet in the field as well as they go and have a drink together, then a snooze together, groom together (obviously) roll together and take it in turns to lay down while the other stands guard. I seriously wonder that when one eventually goes it would be kinder to let the other one go at the same time.

cause if we had to get a shettie as a companion, we are lacking a stable so would it possible be able to share wi abby?? she has a massive stable.

obviously if we get a bigger pony we'll try our best to get a new stable put in or maybe hav to move yards for winter

I have an 11.2 and a 12.3 that share a 12x12 stable without problems - one shod, one unshod

they are separated for feeds but share hay (as the little one obviously eats much less than the working bigger one)

both welsh and welshx

if they've lived together for a while there should be no problems but check the feed situation

well they would live together in the field be brought in together travel together etc....

but i would be very wary of it tho do u not worry that something might happen?

At a livery yard i was at, a girl had a 15hh horse sharing with a minature shetland. they got on very well altho the shetland was a yearling when he started to share.

We always put 2 ponies in one stable (standard 12x12 size) and have no problems.

If the horse and the pony are together in the field and don't fight then there shouldn't be any problems in the stable, except as someone else mentioned possibly at feed time, but they can be seperated and held in-hand for this surely!

yeh of course they would be separated for feeding, abby's just very big compared to a wee shettie lol!! wouldn't want a scrap to break out.

i think i would wait and see how they got on together first they would need to be best buds

I don't have enough clear stables so if I have to bring them all in at once for trimming etc. The filly (12h) shares perfectly happily with her Uncle Fergus (14.2) in a 10 x 11 stall. I have seen them both lying down in there together quite merrily.

I wouldn't leave them in there overnight though.

My two weanling fillies shared a foaling box when we first bought them and they then shared a 15' x 30' barn up until the age of 2 and a half. They adore each other and apart from the odd 'look' at one another got on fine! They are now seperated as they just got too big to live together comfortably but i would definitely use this system, if i had any more youngsters in the future.

We keep our scurry ponies in the same stable, both at home the night before a show and in temp/permanent stabling at shows. Two pairs are Section A's (one 2xgeldings & the other 1xmare&1xgelding) and the large pair are 13hh geldings.
Never had a problem, always put 2 waters and 2 haynets, seperate for feeding because they always want the other pony's food rather than their own, lol. If anything, they seem to prefer it as driving pairs often get very close.

No love each other!! When we hacked them out (me and mom rode them) they lvoed each other! Galoping together the whole way! Except lou (who i was on) got in front and stevie galloped full pelt for her! So mayeb carefull of how close thy get!

We used to double up a 12.2 and 12.3 who were very happy to share their hay and space. They were separated at feeding time as they took that part of the day very seriously indeed! Otherwise no problems at all.

I think you have to know your horses. The riding school I used to go to had 2 sets of absolute best-ever buddies that happily used to share a stable (I mean 1 pair in 1 stable, other pair in another). Equally, at the livery yard where I am now, an owner put her 2 ponies in 1 stable for a couple of hours but had to race in and separate them as one started trying to kill the other. Big buddies, pair bonds, subordinate types should be fine but untested combinations left overnight could result in broken bones and/or traumatised neds by the morning!

Where I used to ride agggges ago, they used to have about 6 shetties. They would keep them in on a saturday night, as their field was quite a walk away and they had early morning lessons. They had what we used to call an 'open' (or THE open

) which was basically stalls, with a wide walkway, and a gate at the end. We used to keep all of them in there

They didn't figh, sometimes there were 'disagreements'

but nothing to worry about.....it was quite a large space

I would say it depends on the ponies and their relationship. We have put pair bonded horses in the same stables and had no issues at all. i have a pair of shetties that if I tried to separate them would die of broken hearts. I have had to specially build them a double unit to live in in my mini stable block. I also have 2 ancient welsh ponies that live together without any problems. Just have to hope that both ponies get along really well. If not, I wouldn't risk it.

My New Forest fillies shared a stable. I bought them both at the same time as weanlings and couldn't seperate them when they came off the lorry as they were feral.

So when they became tame and grew up, they were still happy to be together, were fed together and never fought over whose food was whose, they were happy to share. Will post piccie when I get home.

i think depending on a few variables such as the size of the stable, size of horses and how they get on would solve the query for me, i think yes why not as long as the variables are all good

My foalies shared and I know of little ponies being put in with TB stallions here. Apparently sheep aren´t tough enough (although they´ve got those too at the Jockey Club... not sure what for though as they´re just roaming about)
