I hope that DEFRA who allow the importation of horses from mainland Europe and the criminals who import them have learned a lesson. It is so easy to import substandard and often infectious equines from mainland Europe that I dont know why anyone should bother about health checks etc. I have been known to bang on about EIA and its knock on effects that I now feel smug. I hate to say it but......."I told you so". If Italy has banned the importation of Rumanian horses (and for Italy that is a huge step to take) there must be a bloody good reason. I wish you well with your horses and pray that IEA doesnt become endemic as it is here. Please put a stop to the tripartide(?) agreement. It will be the death of the British equine industry. Mairi.

[/ QUOTE ]Probably because most of the people reading this dont think it will happen to them, have never heard of EIA, dont realise how important this is, and too scared to discuss it because this is one of the concerns the antis had about franch rescue and you are not allowed to talk franch....

well, its about time Franch was brought back to the table for discussion...

this IS serious...and ALL imports by these so-called rescue sites should be suspended.

i'm going to notify DEFRA of every site i know of, every dealer and every transporter invovled in these bin-end dealing sites..

they, DEFRA, HAVE to listen now....

Why should DEFRA listen now? They have better things to do eg, buttering bums, eating out and fiddling their expenses. Wht the fook should they lose sleep over 2 crappy neds in Wiltshire? They will wait till it becomes a plague and then..............enter Super Defra. bang bang bang-theyre dead

I'm horrified by this news. Lets just pray they do a better job containing this than previous diseases. Everyone who owns a horse in this country should be concerned by this.

And to think I spent the best part of £2K making sure MY horse didn't bring any nasty diseases into the country. Why? because I care and it' the right thing to do.

Boogles, I wouldn't feel too sorry for the dead horses owner, if they had followed regulations they would have known these horses were diseased before they left Romania. I wouldn't be surprised if we find they were imported in bulk by a dealer.

Previous experience has not shown them to be quick on the uptake or especially interested
in much outside their own little offices...

I don't always read the news page before coming straight to the forum, so your original post didn't make sense to me which is why I didn't comment.

But have realised you are referring to the HH news item which I have now read, and I am shocked that this can happen.

I think as many of us as possible need to write to Hillary Benn. I assume he can read? Does he know what a horse is?
Does anyone know how to start a petition for no 10?

DEfRA are "manned" by incompetants employed by this countryside and animal hating government, so are, IMHO, likely to do nothing anyway- until its late, when they will then decide they had better look like they will act.... but it will be too late, which is EXACTLY what this government wants- kill the countryside, its way of life and the animals that keep us farming too.

My horse was imported by a dealer from Romania. I doubt he was a reputable dealer, according to the vet, she was far, far too young to travel. She didn't have a passport but her dam did. This would be in 2005.

I didn't buy from the dealer, I am the 3rd owner.

Want to know his name, so you can check him out, see if he's still importing?
