2 Puppies

I am picking up a puppy on Friday and there is one left in the litter unsold....I am considering bringing 2 home....:-) I already have a 4 year old weimaraner and the puppies are working cocker x working labs. I am used to having loads of dogs in the house, I had 4 of my own at one point, and I am forever looking after others, so when they are fully grown doesn't bother me....but I am wondering what people's experiences of having 2 puppies the same age are!?

Good or bad and good idea or bad idea!?

IMO they are more than twice the work and will need training separately, and some walking alone as well as together. Two puppies that are bored will look for trouble together and often are more confident so get into more trouble than one alone.

Is there a reason it is the last of the litter?
 
I have done wouldn't do it again, having two from the same litter, and mine were much older (6-8mths when we acquired them), and especially at this time of year - trees, lights, presents, food everywhere!!!

This was what my concern was! Hopefully they won't be bored, and I could do the training individually etc, but I have a feeling that they will create trouble together!

I don't think there is a reason why it's the last one....

I shall be very interested in the replies you get to this question. I have not had 2 from the same litter but I did once have 2 puppies at the same time, a Manchester Terrier and a Flatcoat. I already had a middle aged Lurcher. They were fine but I think it did help that they were so different. Obviously they played together and had each other for company but I did train them separately. I would imagine this would be important with litter siblings so they learnt to respond to you and not just each other. I find an older dog a great help with puppies.
I have a friend who kept 2 from the last litter of Golden Retrievers she bred, they are fine but she is very experienced and works all her dogs individually as well as walking them together.

No good breeder worth their salt would let 2 siblings go together, twice the work etc and house training 2 would be very difficult, they also bond very closely as well perhaps to the exclusion of their owner. There is lots of info out there(just google)

My 2 Dobermanns are brother & sister, I adopted them at 18months from a breed rescue and they had to go together, theyve been trained separately and are separated regularly so as not to be so dependant on each other. Even though Ive done all this they are very bonded, far more than they are with me, I dont have that bond that I have had with other dogs so really feel Ive missed out.
 
I have 2 boys from the same litter rescued at 9 months. Hard work is an understatement. As well as training individually I had to do lots of work all my dogs together as their bond is stronger than the others which gives them the confidence to ignore me as go off together! I wouldn't be without either but wish they hadn't been same age and litter mates! Much better now theyre 18 months - different personalities and independence from each other!
 
Thanks for all your input :-) I think my mind is made up to stick with just the one! In my head, I knew it was a bad idea, but I find I can easily talk myself round.....!!!
 
Probably the most sensible decision. One is more fun and less stress. Also remember you would have two ending their days at about the same time bringing double sadness.
I like to stagger my dogs ages so at least we can all comfort each other when someone moves on to the rainbow bridge.
 
If you've made up your mind, great. I've done it twice and the first two were easy, working bred from a farm in the middle of nowhere, easy dogs, loved us more than each other! The current youngsters have been very hard work and should have been trained/walked separately but weren't :redface3: They're pet bred ruffians, and can be feral little swines who sometimes take off together (8 hours of frantic searching til midnight last week, they will not be allowed to run in the woods together again!)

I'd say of you have time and you can do separate training, having two together is adorable. Mine love each other, they cwtch together, but they don't mind being alone-we did reinforce this successfully. Either way, can we have lots of pics, I interested to see what this mix looks like. Which was the dam?!

Edited to say: Brig's brother died three years ago, Brig is still going strong, so the two going together may not be anywhere near correct.

The mum is the lab....she's tiny and exceptionally well trained! The breeder asked if my weimaraner is trained....he laughed when I said he comes to call and can sit! I wouldn't hold your breath for pictures though....I have never sussed how to post photos on here!!!

Definitely just have one.... unless you are prepared to put an enormous amount of work in walking them and training them separately they will bond more to each other than they will to you.......
 
Right choice to stick to one. I had two that shared a birthday but were from litters 40 miles apart (only intended to look at 2nd but fell head over heels). Great idea if you just want to let them run feral and entertain each other but not so good if you want well trained dogs as the other pup will always be more entertaining than you are. Mine were like chalk and cheese in nature and both trained to advanced but it was hard work. The thought flashed through my mind last week when I couldn’t decide between black or sable but thankfully I snapped out of it.

Crumbs, you were restrained, puppies are so moreish! She is beautiful!! I bet she'll be a stunner when she grows up! Fab colour!
