Hi All,

I have just joined the forum and I am sooooo green when it comes to all things horsey!!

I have been looking after a lovely cob/cross since Feb this year and he is a real sweetie, I have learnt loads by doing this and now feel I could own my own, my loan is available for sale to me but last week we got the vet out and on the certificate she has "passed" him but noted a small "pea" size lump on his inner thigh which could be a sarcoid. I could not attend the vetting but my hubby did and he said the vet said it might not be a sarcoid but then again it could be??? is this normal practise on a vetting cert? if she is not sure should there not be any follow up? I'm so confused about this as when looking at the subject of sarcoids some people say still buy if everything else is OK while others say never buy a horse with sarcoid problems. When the vet touched the "pea" he bucked and kicked out (something he has never done before) are sarcoids that painful?
Any advice would be greatly accepted many thanks
Lilian

sarcoids can be a bit of a pain in the a** as they can spread quite quickly and the flys dont help at this time of year as we ve found with a girls horse at my yard.im not really sure if they are painfull to be honest but you could ask your vet about freezing or cutting it off if it is a sarcoid if your not completly sure about anything give you vet a ring i would always use an equine vet to be honets good luck

I would speak to the vet who did the vetting for you to discuss the findings and they will advise what they think.

With vettings the vet will state everything they see - thats what you are paying for, if they have any concerns they will put them down, as they need to cover themselves and you.

Vetting certificates just say the horse is suitable for what you want to use it for. There really isn't a black and whit pass and fail. My friends horse had about 6 comments on his, but still passed to event. Those comments were then excluded by his insurance company.

Sarcoids don't usually cause a reaction by the horse.... Unless the owners have been messing around with it and made it sore? Or maybe the vet picked at it? Difficult to know if you weren't there exactly what the vet did to cause the reaction.

Whether you buy him with the sarcoid is your decision... some people wouldn't touch it, others would. They can cause a problem and are expensive to treat. But I know a pony who is covered in them. Liverpool cream controls them but doesn't remove them. But that is quite rare.

many thanks for replies folks, I have spoken with the vet today and she said he is a very sound boy, his flexion tests were good and she said she had to comment on the "pea" otherwise she would not be doing her job. She also said to leave it alone for now and just to watch it carefully as any intervention can then make it flare up.So quite happy with that.

They pretty much have to cover their backs nowadays when it comes to vettings... If you've known this horse for a while I wouldn't worry. We bought a four yr old two years ago with a pea like lump, which the vet brought up. It is still there, not doing any harm. I wouldn't worry too much. The only annoying thing about it is that the insurance companies tend to jump on the vetting band waggon and exclude anything mentioned (in this case sarcoids) from the policy, which is irritating...xx
