Some of our litter have the runs they got it on day 13
I wormed them on day 14
incase it was worms

but on day 12 I put bitch on to beta puppy food
instead of fresh food.

a change of food in mares gives the foals runs.
could it be the change in diet causing the puppies to have runs
and if so what should I do???
keep with the puppy food or go back to fresh food
The reason I changed is because I wanted to make sure she was getting all she needed.

Thanks in advance

I should think that because you changed the food the milk is different and in the stomach there are different bacteria to break down different food (which is why when you have say a curry for the first time you have the sh1t's because you don't have the bacteria inside you to break down the food) and the same principle will apply to the stuff in the bitches milk. I reckon they'd be fine in a few days but if your at all doubtful change the food back.
Did you change the food graduallly or straight away?

Puppies are exactly the same as horses in that you should always change food gradually over a few days not all at once as you have done (even though it was the bitch's food you changed, that affects the milk a lot; take things gradually) Also, it hasn't helped that you wormed the pups when they were having the runs; they need to be well to take that sort of action even if they do need worming, it is better to hold off until they are bright and breezy again; sorry, don't mean to preach!

We find Easyworm is nice and gentle when they're so young but it also does the job well; you'll be surprised - or horrified! - how many worms appear!

We use that fortnightly until they are 12 weeks old then whatever the vet recommends monthly until they're a year old and have never had any problems with this method but as I say, if any of the pups are off colour then we would delay treatment until they're better.

It's not the bitch that needs a puppy food, she just needs good quality food and plenty of it, at least double her normal amount split into several feeds through the day.

I hope your pups are soon better but if they continue with the runs then please have a vet check, they can so easily and quickly, become dehydrated and become really ill when you might lose them.

Good luck, keep us posted.

Well The Good News is that all is back to normal

The reason I wormed them was because I was told that it could be worms causing the problem
so I should worm them give it 24 hrs to clear up.
fingers crossed thats the last of it!!

Thanks for your help
