I love having a youngster but am worried that I will mess things up with him.

Blue is currently very mouthy. He particularly likes licking and mouthing us with the occasional nip thrown in.

I presume this is a normal youngster behaviour, much like toddlers putting everything in their mouths, but do I stop him doing it or allow him to grow out of it?

I dont mind the licking or mouthing, but wont put up with the nipping.

I treat this the same as all my puppies, when they nip give a really scarrey squeal, when they stop, immediatly tell them it is good, best to give a pat or a scratch as you always have your hands with you

HTH

As you say with toddlers ( going throug that human stage myself) they do not grow out of it, they have to be shown it is not acceptable

Just make sure you say no to the nipping

Genie's 6 and very mouthy... she'll grab your hands with her lips, but she knows full well that if she does it with her teeth she'll be told off.

is he a gelding? it is normal my gelding did it when he was a colt and then a month after he was gelded he stopped and then he started again and now he never does it he has just grown out of it just push his head away when he nibbles you

mine is six months older than yours and like others have said i have put up with the mouthing etc but do not put up with the nipping and she just gets a tap or very light slap on her front when she does it and no and now all i have to say when she is thinking about is is noooo. othertwise it degrenerates into biting and general arsyness later on when breaking etc.

My lad is six and is very mouthy. . . has been like this since he was four. I love it, i let him do it, but i will not tolerate him nipping.

our 3yo 3.5yo mouths everything
we dont mind as its a baby thing

she leads herself out and in... chews the rope
the mouths at us too... but the other day she swallowed my finger... so she got a slap cos she bit me....if she goes to nibble she gets a flick on the snout
