I have a 2 year old thoroughbred, I'm not sure how old she was when her mum died, but I know she did have to be bottle fed for a time. She had a pot belly as a foal/ yearling, she was broken and started training along with the other yearlings / 2 year old racers, and she lost her pot belly, she then got turned away to grow, and her belly came back straight away. She looks like she is in foal. Does anyone else have any experience with a 2 year old that still has a lot of growing to do, and is grossly pot bellied. Thanks!

first guy would be worming? def get a worm count done. some youngsters need specific worming schedules, it's not enough to just use the typical ones at the typical times.

Thanks for the replies, I've only just got her in my care, a worm count is in the post. She will have had a 'normal' worming schedule so far. She's had a belly like this since her mum died (not including when she was in full work). I wondered if she could be lacking in something or have an imbalance due to missing out on some of her mother's goodness. I'll post a photo of her belly, it's like nothing we've seen here, and we have had hundreds of yearlings come through the yard over the years.
Thanks again

Here she is mid October. I haven't been able to exercise her as planned as she has a huge abscess under her jaw which is now solid and not going anywhere :(
Previously to these photos she had been wormed 'normally' - nothing specific to her, but wormed a lot because of her constant pot belly. - She is A LOT better as a 2 year old than she was as a yearling.

Thanks, I think the sun helps in the top photo! But she has definitely gone darker. I'm pleased I took photos like this, as seeing her every day I was convinced that she was looking worse. But from these, I would say she is less ribby now. The abscess is like a large unripe avocado - it may take a while :(

Thank you for spoiling tomorrows breakfast (avocado)

She looks a lot better in the second photo, hope abscess ripens without causing a problem.

Omg what a colour change! She looks better in the 2nd picture but the drop belly may never go completely, the wither and top line has quite a bit to do with it, she is quite flat behind the wither very similar to one of my Arabs and he has always had a bit of a belly, if his in proper work and top line is good he looks better but out of work he does tend to look in foal!

Thanks, good to know!
