Hi, what does everybody do with there 2 years old. My 2 and a half year old coloured cob is getting to the stage where hes getting bored of standing in the field and coming in for an occassional groom. He is absolutely perfect to handle now, an 8 yr old handles him daily with ease, he is turning 3 in the summer but due to pregnancy am planning on waiting til next summer to back him. What should I be doing with him so hes actually doing some work?

you could teach him to long rein, just in walk. Stick some cones or something and get him to go round a set route. Nothing strenuous but mentally challenging. My 3 year old is going through same issue, bored and needs something to keep his mind busy.

Go for walks, with company at first and see how he takes it...try walks in the fields, quiet lanes...get him out seeing the world.
If you have transport try in hand showing...practise at home and go and win a few ribbons.
Long reining like others have said, try walking over poles, around cones and get a few peeps to stand around the edge of the school and make noise so he gets used to clapping, plastic bags, litter etc etc
You don't have to do things everyday or for very long but little, often and consistently.

Don't know if it is possible fou you but I find the best thing for youngsters is a field ate of a similar age.

Maybe some ground work with him.

He has a field mate thats similar age to him. He regularly goes for a potter around the field but may start taking him on little walks down the lane and doing sone long reining in the field like youve suggested, thankyou for all the ideas :)
