hi
i have a 20 year old exmoor X, who got diagnosed with DJD 11 years ago, cusions 4-5 years ago, he has now recently got arthritis in his hips, which make him stiff on his back end but he is also tucked up and has been for a week or so, hes not cold or off colour but he is feeling abit sorry for himself thought but so would anyone who was the way he is at the moment, beut does not work on him, i have tried living him in/out rugged up and in/out unrugged, all depending on the weather that is, hes not aloud out if it is cold and wet
can anyone please give me an oppinion, and yes i have already spoke to the vet and he says in in the day and out at night 2 beut twice a day, but no better so he is now of the beut as it does nothing

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Sorry your exmoor is in this state. What is it that you are asking? Is it would we have him pts? or does anyone know of another possible cure? What has your vet advised long term?

The oldie I look after responds very well to NAF Devil's relief. She doesn't seem to get much effect from Bute either. If you are asking if it is time to PTS, only you and your vet can really make that decision but better a day too soon than a day too late.

Hello,

A few years ago, I bought a small human magnetic back pad for my older
pony and she gets a couple of hours a day with it when the weather is
either very damp or very cold (like last winter).

Hope this helps -- Rachel

A fiew questions realy, why is he tucked up and how can I try easing the pain for him, I hav been told to try devils claw. Its the same as beut but without the side aftects but it iter works, or doesn't, I think that won't work because beut desnt work on him, I don't want to think about having him put down, I want to try what I can to take away the pain and if nothing works before winter sets in then have a re-think x

I don't know what the ground is like where you are at the moment but we are seeing a number of older, arthritis ponies who are requiring more pain relief at the moment and the only thing we can put it down to is the hard ground.

Try a different make of bute, some horses respond differently (Danilon, Equipalazone or Pro-Dynam). Alternatively you could try a different painkiller altogether - Metacam, or Finadyne for example. Some do better on a different type, although no-one really knows why.

If you're looking for alternative therapies then acupuncture can be very useful in relieving pain of various types.

I hope he is more comfortable soon.

Sorry, but I think you may have to think about your options, for the welfare of the horse, most ponies like to be active and being part of "the community", if he is uncomfortable (ie in pain), getting sad and lonely then you must try to do your best for him.
If he is on 2 bute long term, has this had a long term effect, we only use Danilon but two seems a lot for a pony long term.
He has a lot of problems and if he is tucked up as well, I think you need to have a long talk with the vet, and be prepared to make the decision, which, in the long term is yours, some vets are not at all keen on being straight up, being more concerned with their "client relationship"

hi
i am just giving a quick update, got told of a friend to try vetri-fen, £40 for 21 day supply, i could not afford that so she came to my farm today with super-fen it is the same as vetri-ven but cheaper so he has gone on that today, i will give all a up-date on how he goes on with it
thanks for all your feedback

FWIW: Have you asked the vet about the possibility of your pony having
ulcers? The bute could be a contributing factor. His tucked up appearance
could be an indication of ulcers. Perhaps your vet could prescribe
Omeprazole (GastroGuard). Hope he's feeling better soon.
