2025 foals

Confusingly black foals are typically born a mousey faded colour and darken up as they shed the foal fluff. Grey foals are typically born as a hyperpigmented version of their base colour but can have grey hairs around the eyes ie. Grey goggles.

Don't make it simple do they 😅 I'm so excited to see how he looks after his first shed now!
 
It will be interesting to see what colour he does become. If I just saw him with no other info I’d probably be saying black, they often have that silvery sheen over them as foals. But with the parents I’m leaning towards grey being the most likely, but he doesn’t look typical going to be grey foal!
 
You can work out the genetics then as dad has only one grey parent he must be heterozygous for grey Gg so he has 50% chance of going grey. As the baby looks black both mum and dad must only have one agouti Aa and both must have at least one dominant extension if one has a chestnut parent then they would be Ee. As foal is solid mum must be heterozygous for tobiano.

This is interesting, thank you! So from what I'm understanding, agouti is a recessive gene, both parents have to be Aa to be able to pass down the a, making baby aa if he is black? Sorry for throwing so many questions at you, I'm finding this whole gene thing fascinating 😅

Not really dominant Agouti is an example of a dominant gene as you only need one copy to display the bay phenotype. E or dominant extension is what makes a horse black versus chestnut. Agouti only effects a horse if it's black. So a chestnut horse can pass down a dominant Agouti gene but you wouldn't be able to tell from the colour. Sorry not very good at explaining without a punnet square but I do enjoy a bit of colour genetics.

My mares recent foal has just been dna tested, I thought he wasn't black enough at birth to be grey, but he is going to be grey
 
My foal was born yesterday afternoon.

My homebred mare by Laban out of my old Irish jumping pony, foaled a lovely long legged filly by Britannia's Bijou

Respectful time of 1608 in the afternoon. Up by 24 minutes old

Little guy now a week old doing well. He is very petite. One of the smallest at the stud farm. But then the mare is dainty.
Went to the Stallion show at stallion ai yesterday. His dad was loving cuddles from everyone. (Ustinov Van Elsenham)
The stallion that caught my eye most if you were wanting to breed a jumper was J’adore Team. Effortlessly over a big fence.
If I was going for foal 2 it would be to the full ID Greenhalls Supersonic, to add bone to my TB.
Was really great to see the stallions

Joining as now officially on foal watch 👋

This is Bee, she’s a 15yo by OBOS Quality out of a Cruising mare. She’s in foal to Vivant van de Heffinck - last covered 6th June, so on 331 days now. Vet examined her in March and estimated 8-10 weeks so we are hitting that now too. She’s been bagging up for about the last 4 weeks and is now getting very waxy!!
She’s a bit of a pro - this baby will be her 5th. We bought her in foal.

She’s showing other signs too - back end has slackened off, belly has changed shape and she’s generally got the demeanour of someone who is extremely pregnant and getting a bit fed up.

Her and my other 2 have been living out, but I’ve tweaked their paddocks so she has a massive stable to herself but still has full view of the others, who are out in a paddock next to her box. All seem content with this setup!

Would love baby to appear tonight for various reasons but I guess they’ll come when they’re ready 😆

Bee had her baby this evening but sadly we lost the foal 😭 he was very very stuck and despite our best efforts, we were unable to get him out on time. Heartbreaking, but she’s ok - we were on the cusp of PTS before our last ditch attempt managed to get him out.
A beautiful little bay colt, run free little one - sorry we couldn’t save you 💔
