2025 foals

Oh goodness, I'm so so sorry. It's utterly heartbreaking- I've lost a mare and foal in similar situation and you feel so helpless. Best wishes for the mare, it's hard for her too

Itā€™s just horrible, Iā€™m absolutely devastated and itā€™s impossible to not think ā€œwhat ifā€¦?ā€
Iā€™m sorry youā€™ve been through this as well, itā€™s so so sad.
It feels extra sad because the stallion died last year, too.
Waiting for placenta to fully deliver, vet gonna come out this morning again to check everything over as well. Bee is currently tucked up in her foaling box with baby šŸ’”
Gutted doesnā€™t come close to explaining it!

If they are stuck, they are stuck- ours was just a massive foal that hadnā€™t presented quite right and there was no room to work around.
Unfortunately my mare retained the placenta and we just couldnā€™t get it all out so ultimately lost her to toxic laminitis. If it isnā€™t out soon I'd get her on really intensive treatment- flush, antibiotics and monitor really closely

Yeah I think our guy was similar - vet tried very very hard to shift him but it was incredibly difficult.
Vet is coming out very shortly to deal with placenta too.
Thanks for sharing your experiences and sorry to derail what should be a joyous thread with my news - hopefully things are much more straightforward for the rest of this years cohort of babies šŸ˜¢

You canā€™t consider it until the mare is well, and right now this mare isnā€™t. I remember feeling very pressured by everyone suggesting fostering when we lost our foal, but it wouldnā€™t have been fair on the mare.

So sorry to hear this, how devastating. I hope you and Bee are doing okay considering the circumstances :(

So very sad to hear this, but don't feel bad, it's all part of breeding.
 
Thanks everyone. Vet was out this morning for a couple of hours, placenta removed and flushed, sheā€™s coming back again later to repeat to be safe. Antibiotics & oxytocin given too, more to be administered throughout the day.
The little guy is still in with her but Iā€™m going to have to move him at some stage - just breaks my heart because heā€™s so perfect. He wonā€™t ever really have a name, but I am calling him Hugo, he was going to be a big lad and I think that wouldā€™ve been a suitable choice.

We are in Ireland anyway, locally there seem to be quite a few foster mares available anyway. Iā€™ll evaluate as we go, but I might just let her be, sheā€™s had a very rough day bless her.
 
Sorry for your loss Sheep, thatā€™s very very sad news, iā€™m heartbroken for you all.
But itā€™s good Beeā€™s cleared the placenta and is recovering nowā€¦fingers crossed for herā€¦big hug for you X
 
Thanks folks - sheā€™s in good form and has been eating her feed with antibiotics like a total champ, and has been extremely tolerant of me treating her like a pin cushion with her oxytocin jabs.
Vet coming back this afternoon to flush her out again, fingers crossed everything is nice and clean.

My friend very kindly came yesterday evening to collect little Hugo for me, so thatā€™s once less thing to worry about - got a little lock of his lovely curly tail hair and some snippets of his mane, not that there was much there! Iā€™m a sentimental old bird
 
Just a wee follow up on Bee šŸ
Sheā€™s doing really well. She was flushed twice on Tuesday, once on Wednesday and ended up being done again last night because she had a slight digital pulse - vet felt it was more likely to be due to the warm weather, but wanted to err on the side of caution. She is barefoot and happily rock crunching, but of course will continue to keep an eye.

Still on antibiotics, we will finish up with those tomorrow night, with a few more days of bute to keep her comfortable.
She has been a superb & tolerant patient, so Iā€™m glad to be able to sort of ā€œleave her aloneā€ now for a few days, aside from monitoring temperature etc.

Plan is to do a sterile flush on Wednesday as she should have her foal heat by then, hopefully that will be her well on the road to recovery.

Looking forward to following this yearsā€™ foals, itā€™ll be nice to see the journey from afar and, assuming Bee has a swift and straightforward recovery, hopefully next year we might be back with happier news.
