2025 Goals and Plans (and 2024 Review)

I didn’t add to last year’s thread, but this time last year I couldn’t have imagined how my horsey life would have changed. I’ve gone from thinking that getting a horse was something that had passed me by, to being the proud owner of a lovely ISH gelding named Curly.

I’ve not even had him for two months yet, so my 2025 goals are very much subject to revision as we get to know each other.

2025 GOALS:
1. Continue to build a good solid bond with him
2. Develop his confidence in me, with the aim of helping with his spookiness. We’re working on this with my instructor, by doing lots of groundwork.
3. Get out hacking, with the ultimate aim of a beach ride
4. Enter an online dressage class

I probably didn't write goals last year. If I did, they'd probably have involved doing fun things with my mare (nope) and taking Fergus to a couple of medieval games events (yep) and doing a bit of horse archery (nope) with him. Archery isn't an option at my current yard unfortunately (pretty much its only downside!), but I did take Fergus to play with swords, spears and lances twice, including a trip to Wales to stay in a castle and generally play silly games in the courtyard. That was pretty epic.

2025:

Fergus is 19 and a bit arthritic - my primary aim is to keep him sound and in some level of light hacking. If he's sound and happy, I'd very much like to repeat last year's events - the upside of medieval stuff is that it isn't taxing physically, it's all straightlines and steady cantering! The drive to Wales is the biggest issue. Beyond that, I have no aspirations for him, but I'd take him to the forest / beach for some photos if it's possible.

I'd like to get the mare back in light work and just keep Daemon alive.

I was hoping to be working towards my Stage 2 riding but looking at the cost of lessons now my original RS has closed, I doubt that will be happening! ☹️

Well this certainly did not happen!! ☹️

I found a new RS which is a positive but have managed to ride a grand total of 3 times in walk and trot as although my mind is willing, my body says canter is well out of the question at the moment and my attempt at canter was massive disaster😭

2025 goals

- Aim to ride once a month - whether this is on a real horse or the mechanical horse at the Naylors locally!
- Be able to ride a walk and trot test by the end of the year without sounding or looking like I’m about to keel off the side of the horse.
- Visit horses from my previous job more as this will help my mental health.
- Go racing more - I have only been once this year (I think - brain fog!) as I find this very difficult now due to my energy levels. I need to plan more around having access to seating and factor in fatigue to driving and a long day etc.

2024 goals:

Competition wise - PSG regionals, Inter 1 AF. Hoping to do PSG at some bigger shows too.

Training wise - develop the piaffe and 1’s (we are stuck on 5, my legs just aren’t quick enough!) and the canter piris need some more work but that’s all a time and strength game. And I’d love to pick our SJ training back up a bit more.

We achieved everything I wanted to and then some this year. Still really thrilled to have gone to both winter and summer nationals!

Feel like we smashed that, quietly pleased. We were getting 12 x 1’s down the long side and now they’ve gone awol but they’ll be back I’m sure.

2025 goals:

Winter and summer regionals @ PSG/Inter 1. Hopefully qual winter/summer nationals somewhere along the way. Will try and get to as many high profiles as I can. Aiming for an inter 2 by the end of the year.

I found it helped to make goals but not put time on them, that way when life throws the inevitable curve balls your way, it's easier to adapt.

Improving the lope with the next step to flying changes is on my to-do list.
Also, work on building Amber's confidence out hacking, including upping the speed.

That would all then help with the competitions.

First step, find the latest lost shoe! :) I have given in and ordered a metal detector.
I didn’t find the shoe and she lost a few more during the year but fewer than in 2023 so I’ll take the win .

Flying changes not there yet and need some dedicated time to work on them which is tricky as good weather equals competition season and it’s best not to combine the two.

Hacking and increasing the speed is a big tick. Can hack out solo in all paces now and in a large group. We had an awesome time in the New Forest and we’re going back for the advanced camp this year.

Competition wise she did really well. It was sad there wasn’t a breed show this year but she’s WES ranch riding champ and SQH ranch vrh champ.

Outside horses life has had some big challenges this year but everyone is still here and it look like good news ahead .

The youngsters are doing well and will continue to be outstanding in their fields 😆

My goal for this year is more of the same.

My next non time related goal is for Amber to win an AQHA point. That’s rather out of my control as it’s only possible if the classes have enough entries for points to be awarded. But we have to be in it to win it :)

I had a search of the thread from last year and found I set some goals....

But in 2024 I'd like to ...

  • do more hacking in company until we both feel relaxed including upping the pace we did more hacking this year, mainly just with one or two others, I've done more trotting but still haven't worked up to canter out (I just have a bit of a mental block I think)
  • be able to travel to my old yard and hack out with my friends In march I ended up moving back to my old yard and have done lots of hacking with my friends!!
  • be able to do a tidy canter transition in the school Sometimes!
  • practise some working equitation exercises in the school (maybe see if we can go to a training clinic??) I did a bit by myself in the school, need to do a bit more. I did go to one training clinic and had a great time. Lack of transport prevented a repeat.
  • continue working on groundwork and maybe do a little at liberty Still doing a fair bit of groundwork, especially when I am tired/short of time. Haven't done much liberty apart from getting him to follow me around the school the other day!
  • finish teaching him to pick up a toy and go and drop it in a bucket (we've nailed the pick-up, currently working on trying to get it into a bucket, just for fun! :)) He definitely enjoys picking up the toy and will go and pick it up if it is thrown (like a dog!) but I didn't work on the dropping it into a bucket much. I have been teaching him to tell the difference between blue and yellow!!
Mainly I'de just like him to stay healthy and sound. We had a weird blip last Jan/Feb where he wasn't great, never did get to the bottom of that despite vet checks and scanning for ulcers. On the whole he's been fine though.

I haven't set 2025 goals yet. I suspect many of them will be a continuation of the ones from last year. I'm using ChatGPT (artificial intelligence) to help me with all my goals this year. I told it to act as a Life Coach and am really enjoying the process so far, it's actually making me really slow down and think and set reminders and schedules etc. I pay for a subscription so it "knows" quite a lot about me already and came up with some really good initial suggestions. I'm hoping I will stick to more of the changes this year and would recommend it as a tool.

O P, Talland do side saddle lessons , but I dont think there s any other place further west. Your other option is , with your own horse, to go on a' have a go' day, look up Penny Clarke , she does them all over the country.

My main aim for this year is to still be able to ride , my O H also, so that we can hack out together and continue to enjoy riding. So both us and our horses need to stay sound .
Continue with dressage and side saddle lessons to get my Lily moving better - more swing , less sewing machine.
Aim for some side saddle Intro tests [ stressless].
Get a habit and try low level showing.
Sell a 2 year old.

My goal last year was to get out to dressage and do some low level stuff, which I didn’t. In fairness though, I wanted some alterations done to my wagon and my Dad did them for me for free, but it did mean I was at the mercy of his time scheduling, so the wagon was out of action for a while.

It’s all up and running now, alterations done (which should make my life so much easier on my own) so this year I am going to get out and do a bit.

I’d quite like to teach Meg to drive but I’ll need help for that as I have no idea where to start. I mean, I can do the long reining stuff no problem, but my knowledge of driving horses is zero.

Polly will continue doing light work. I don’t hack her anymore since the snapped leg incident, but she does light schooling sensibly in the manège. Keeping her alive through laminitis season is our main aim though, as always!

The advice I got (from experienced drivers) is to send away to a pro - so it's proper money. I wouldn't mind having a little pony for driving myself. But realistically that won't be any time soon!

Mine was:
“Would like the You Tube to grow bigger and make some money to pay for vets bills! It will envitably be a bag of carrots… but small acorns….”

YouTube actually has done ok and actually pretty much paid for 40% of our Paris Olympics Tickets and it has funded 50% of our our Chris Burton and Jonelle Price Lessons. So overall better than a bag of carrots.

Now if it could double/triple in size for 2025 that would be amazing.

Is your channel Eventing Journey? The link in your bio doesn't work for me. It keeps popping up as recommended for me and I have a feeling it's someone on here.

Yep - @TheMule and me
I will take a look at the link - I removed a tonne of stuff a while ago because I got tagged on FB by one of the child influencers parents who saw one of my comments on here.

Loving this thread - while everyone on this forum obviously has a common love of all things horsey, we're quite a diverse bunch of people aren't we! It just shows how horses can enrich our lives in so many different ways, and ultimately, we just love being around them.

I didn't really have any goals for last year apart form just enjoying my 19 year old Connie and doing the things he loves most (XC!). Sadly we didn't do loads and loads as I spent most the year not convinced he was feeling 100% and we got a Cushings diagnosis in autumn so hopefully not he's medicated we'll start to have a bit more consistency in his energy levels. However, when he is feeling good, he is on top of the world and even stood in last minute to do the 90AE at Bramham as my friend's horse was lame and we also whizzed round a couple of hunter trials too - so got some lovely photos from the events.

2025 goals are:
- continue to listen closely to the Connie to make sure I don't ask too much from him
- get better at hacking alone from home
- hopefully sit back on my retired Welsh Cob whos recently had Arthrimed which may possibly mean we can hack again to help control his weight. Need to get him a new saddle as I donated his to HAPPA a few years back!
- I'd love to take them both on a hacking holiday to Dalby Forest or maybe a few days at Somerford to enjoy their farm ride and box up to Delamere etc something both ponies can enjoy together with me and a friend
- I'd also like to have some regular lessons on a schoolmaster to contiue to improve my own riding while my the Connie is having a break from arena work

Nothing competative this year, but if I can hack my two boys together again that would be a dream come true.

Looking forward to seeing how everyone gets on :)

I didn’t post last year but we had a good if somewhat rollercoaster year.
We were placed at Royal Windsor but went into the cones a breath away from the lead and had a disaster finishing only just 6th.
Le Pin we had a turn over, wrote the carriage off and came home with a lame pony.
We worked hard and got it back for the world championships where we had a good for us marathon and clear in the cones to help the team finish 5th of 17 teams - a really great result for the squad, best performance in 20 years.
Maestro has made his competing debut, from his first stay away and 1 day event where we just did dressage to now starting to be competitive at indoors. This year he needs to learn about water and outdoor events. He’s made his riding E riders plus fun club debuts but it’d be nice to get out to some ridden clinics or dressage.
Cobby was 3rd at the indoor nationals- my mistake held him off the win- again! He started his FEI career with a 3rd at Chepstow and has completed his first team selection event, and first ridden county . He’s carrying on the indoors again but I’m a bit on the fence as to next plans. Some more ‘fun’ big shows would be good, whatever that is..! Between BD championships, showing or fei driving.

I didn’t write my plans and goals down last year, but I wish I had. Last year we didn’t compete much but I did start endurance and loved it. I also had a go at team penning, did a bit of show jumping and dressage, went to the beach and hacked loads. One thing I really missed was eventing, but I didn’t miss competing as often as I used to. I have been quite happy just riding how and when I want to.

My 2025 goals are
  • Keep the horses as healthy and sound as possible.
  • Rehab Henry and get him back to feeling fit and happy
  • Nail down flying changes
  • Improve Henry’s turn on haunches
  • Improve our half pass
  • Ride a medium dressage test
  • Get back into endurance with Coolie
  • Take Henry to an endurance ride
  • Ride with friends more
  • Jump some fun show jumping things, at home and out and about.
  • Go cross country training
  • Go eventing if timing and finances allow.
A lot of those goals require Henry to be feeling himself again, so that’s step one. Hopefully I’ll be able to ride him again by March, then it’ll be a lot of building him back up so he’s better than ever 🤞

Ohhh goals going to try to keep them simple as I did achieve a lot last year even if my beloved loan fell through.
So continue my lessons and get to a point where I know I can get on anything ready to go to viewings.
Make progress with the share my friend has offered me and get out hacking around the forest.
Keep saving and saving to buy my own best friend.
Sort out all my horse bits that i bought for my loan horse and get them stored properly.
Importantly finally sell my saddle.
Get over to a XC course.
Watch more races at Lingfield and Plumpton.
Mores shows to attend.

Review of 2024

Made reasonable progress with the ridden one, Otto. He remains ridiculously spooky and novice for his age (he is a "covid baby" so 2 years behind in terms of experience). On a good day he managed high 60s in his Intro dressage, won some inhand classes, managed to get him round a busy novice ridden class by the skin of our teeth (he was very excited!), and managed longer distances out solo hacking. So slow progress, but it IS progress. We also found a SUPER instructor who "gets" him.

The homebred yearling gave us a scare in the summer when I found her ataxic in the field. Still no idea what happened but she's fine now (and so is vet's bank balance). I sent the companion Welsh yearling back to her breeder as she was difficult to handle, wound everyone up and gave my yearling bad ideas. We now have a delightful little connemara yearling instead who is lovely and quiet, and the two are getting on well.

My broodmare became slightly lame and we are investigating.

Goals for 2025

Keep all my little herd happy and well.

Do a prelim on Otto. This is harder than it sounds. His canter work is still unpredictable when away from home and he does an emergency stop if he sees something he doesn't like. Carry on training with the new instructor. Extend our hacking range.

Take the two youngsters to a couple of inhand shows and teach them all the skills needed to do this.

Surprised I didn’t write on last years thread. But this year started off ok, went really well in the middle, then the wheels fell off towards the end.

2024 highs:
  • First BE90 placing (Oxstalls)
  • First BE90 win (Kingston Maurward)
  • DC round the BE90RQ course at Bicton
  • Jumping DC round a really tough track in horrible weather at Chard to come 2nd (this was probably my proudest eventing moment of the year)
  • Going to our first ever stay away shows and behaving like a dream
  • Just being a general solid hack over all sorts of terrain on Dartmoor

2024 lows:
  • Hock OA and ulcer diagnosis
  • Retiring XC at Bicton 3DE because my confidence crumbled halfway round and I was pulling him out of fences at the last minute
  • Having all my well built confidence fall apart at the beginning of October and have yet to gain it back… (hence our problems at Bicton)

My biggest aim for 2025 is to get my confidence back again, and to try and have it more solidified so I don’t lose it all again the minute something goes wrong. But I’ve copied the list that I made earlier this week for myself:

SMALLER GOALS
  • Feel happy jumping a 90cm again
  • DC at BE90
  • Sub 30 dressage score
  • Clear round at BN
  • Do a BD Novice test
  • Beach ride
  • Try not to fall off SJ at the first event of the season (again…) (for context I’ve fallen off in the SJ at our first event for the last 2 years 🤣)

BIG GOALS
  • Complete Bicton 3DE
  • Qualify for regionals again
  • Jump a Discovery
  • Complete a BE100
  • Do some sort of professional confidence coaching (this is in big goals because ££ and my social anxiety are making it inordinately difficult to actually make myself do)

I did the Charlie Unwin days he runs for coaches and found it completely transformed the way I think. You get to chat to coaches as well about you. They are free to attend and held at Bath. They are a nice day and I would totally recommend. I think sometimes you have to put yourself out there in order to make gains. I remember feeling really nervous when I first went as kind of thing I hate - nobody I knew, didn’t know what to expect but actually even doing stuff like that stretches your resilience.

To put my post in context... What with mum’s fall in 2018, her rapid decline in 2019, Covid and her death in 2020, her internment in 2021, and the death of Mr Red’s mum in 2022, then Mr Red's death in 2023, I also admire myself for picking up and throwing myself forward in any form.

That was my family, suddenly they were all gone.

I started this year a single widow, even having a posh alarm to make sure I got home at night, for the sake of my animals. I'd achieved a lot in 2023, playing with the horse, retiring from work to spend more time with Mr Red, then dealing with the aftermath of his sudden and unexpected loss. I'd half renovated the house and decided to make a decision on possibly moving in September 2024. I'd also signed up to Plenty of Fish, to hopefully strike out with a new relationship...

From a FB post I did (edited).....

Heck, my 2024 goals were smashed! I could simply not have known how my life would do a 180 and change in so many wonderful ways. I met BF. For some reason, as soon as we met, I knew he was ‘it’ and I didn’t even know what ‘it’ entailed.
I had to change many things as BF was very different to me. Initially, I was somewhat overawed at letting go of old habits and thoughts. I had his help and also counselling. But, I remained open to change, as I promised myself, and have had the most fantastic, adventurous, satisfying, loving of years.
At the start of the year, I showed BF the book that I get printed off Facebook. “I wonder if I will feature in your 2024 book?” he asked. LOL. This year’s book is so BIG and packed with new stuff, it can’t be made into one book, I’m having to have 2 printed.
Holidays... they were a shock to me. I initially turned BF down as he did travel and I did not, but then I grasped happiness and elected to change. We started, after just a couple of months, with Montegegro. Then I did South Africa on safari, followed by and epic trip to Canada and Alaska. Then Edinburgh, a horse camp in Cheshire, Italy, London, triathlon camp in Lanzarote, Blackpool and finished up with Durham. We did two triathlons, two Sportives, many, many Parkruns, and so many walks, rides etc etc.
Tomorrow, I have to set some new goals for next year. I have no idea how to follow this one!
After the past few years, I reckon I deserved a good ‘un.

Then, the goals for 2025, in a post on NYD....

Every year I set goals. Looking back, they have been so different over the years as I, and life, have changed. This year, I had no idea what goals to set. I achieved so much last year, and had a wonderful year, I just wanted this year to be even half as good! But then…
I was supposed to swim this morning but due to a mix up, I did not. I was fed up, initially, as I was all set to get freezing cold in some obscure lake and the change in plans disconcerted me. I called BF to tell him of the change in plans, and he was out walking the doggos, he'd taken them to the place that we met. I wished I could transport myself there instead, but dogs can't walk for that long, old gimmers that they are. BF could hear that I was fed up and offered to come home and drive me to the coast for a swim, so I didn't miss out - just like that.
And I realised my new goal. Don’t sweat the small stuff! I don’t need him to drive me to the coast (although it was wonderful that he would offer at the drop of a hat). Heck, I had a boat load of vaccinations yesterday for upcoming holidays, and have had sore arms and headache since. Would immersion in a cold lake have been great for me? Nah, probs not! The big thing is to enjoy what I have now. I now have a wonderful life, with a wonderful kind, romantic and generous man. I need to allow myself to enjoy it, without restriction.
I do have a second goal. In the last wonderful year, I stacked weight on. I need to either lose it again, or be content with where it is. Either would be fine. Just to be easy with it, or do something about it – as long as I stop being unhappy about it!
Oh, a third goal was obvious to me, but I now feel I should put it anyway so I will edit and add. It is to keep deepening and developing a wonderful relationship and keeping on earning the trust that BF has placed in me. Myself with Mr Red was different to when I was simply a single widow, and different again as part of 'our' new relationship. A new relationship is its own thing and needs nurturing and care. I aim to do that.

I won a £50 voucher for Knights of Middle England so I will aim to use that in the Spring, probably side saddle again or I might get adventurous and try something else
Yesssss....

I was thinking of booking myself and BF onto an archery lesson there! It says suitable even for non riders.... He's only ridden 30 odd times in his life and they'll take a booking.

I think we should book the same session!!!!

(and I still wish you lived close enough to have a ride on Rigsby!!!!).

From what I've seen of yours and BF's videos, I bet you guys would love it! @Kunoichi73 I believe might know more about the archery and other sessions they do :)

I did watch the one of Rigsby and BF zipping off into the distance and thought 'if only that could have been me' 😂

I've had non-riders do archery clinics on one of mine, and non-riding friends have done the archery courses at Karl Greenwood's. Generally it just means the horse stays in whatever gait they're capable of riding it (if he's ridden 30 times, he's a lot more experienced than any of those I'm referring to, who stayed in walk because they literally couldn't rise in trot!). It's still a fun experience, hopefully you'll both enjoy it!

I just wrote a rider profile for him. Went something like, "I am confident in all paces in the open and an arena. My girlfriend says I lack technical ability, but I don't know how as she's even had me on a mechanical horse. Current videos of me zooming around the countryside can be shown. (Yes, it is the girlfriend writing this LOL).

He is frighteningly fearless. He has no idea why anyone makes a fuss about cantering about. That said, he has yet to fall off, although I have told him that it is inevitable one day.

That was meant to be a trot. He said Rigs wanted to run, so he let him!

I couldn't video as I had looooong reins as I was expecting to be trotting, so missed most of it whilst I picked up the knitting!

My OH rarely rides, but he is so un-worried about it when he does that is exactly the sort of thing he would do and say!

I've done a few of the 2 day archery courses that KOME run. They're brilliant. The horses are well trained and know their job. The sessions are tailored to the riders. I think for the 2 day courses, they ask that you are confident on canter but for the individual lessons, you'd be ok not cantering. You could do the whole session in walk. Even on the 2 day courses, there are people who've done the whole thing in walk.

The way the 2 day courses run is that you do ground archery in the morning and ridden stuff in the evening. They may also use the wooden horses for mounted practice. Depending on how many are on the course, they may split people into 2 groups, depending on ability. Most of the sessions will be on a straight roped track. They will occasionally set up more complex tracks though.

They also do a 3 day course that includes archery, trick riding, tent pegging, quintain, jousting, sword work, drill riding etc. For that, they do ask that you can canter.

If I lived closer, I'd do archery and jousting regularly.

I'm another one who'd love a ride on the gorgeous Rigsby! He's such a star! 🥰

I've already done quintain work with BH, and BF has done archery unmounted. We were just going to start with a 2 hour lesson.

I'm loving that he's giving horses a go and do all sorts of different things to pique his interest. Most rides he's done have involved visiting the pub on horseback 🤣

We did football on horses the other day. He's ridden a mule on Mount Vesuvius, a western horse in the Rockies and a super horse, cantering all over the mountain in Lanzarote. We are booked to go to the UAE in a few months, to go gallop Arabian horses in the desert.

He'll never be interested in dressage or anything, but zooming around is fun, as would archery be, I think.
