Our 2009 Touareg is dying. I have spent hours researching and I am no further forward.

We occasionally tow an old IW 510. Two fat cobs so I think 2200 combined weight. When we do travel it is a 4.5 hour journey. We need a 4x4 for access when we get there.

Need to get to the yard on icy/ snowy days.

Have a family car for daily use.

We live in a city with ULEZ

What would you buy with 10/ 15k?

My Disco (11 year old HSE Luxury, 3 litre diesel) is worth about £15k, it’s compliant with some low emissions zones (it is fine in Bath but not Bristol) it’s a total work horse, has never been sick or sorry and it’s nice to drive. Easily tows in any situation. Good in snow and ice (I use it for the school run when it’s icy as my other car is rear wheel drive).

My Tiguan tows 2.5 tonnes, has 4x4 and done about 41 mpg. You need to shop around with the rigs as they all tow different weights!

Why is the Touareg dying? Would it be worth fixing, better the devil you know etc. We tow with a 2006 Shogun. Not sophisticated in any sense but incredibly reliable. They stopped making them around 2017 so a later model should be within budget. Unlikely to be ulez compliant, for a diesel to be ulez compliant it needs to be one that uses AdBlue, Euro 6 I believe. Have a look at the Rexton. Or a newer Touareg?
