I have recently rehomed a TB mare, she’s 22 years old. She’s been out of work for around 6 months, but I’m bringing her back to light hack. She’s needing better weight, her previous owners didn’t really feed her much. Wondering what your advice would be. I have been giving her conditioning build up cubes, with some chaff and a little Boswellia liquid.

thank you in advance! xx

Micronised linseed if the feed doesn’t already have it is good. I’d be wary of pumping too much in at once in case it blows her brain. Speedibeet is pretty harmless and a good source of additional fibre.

Hay, hay and more hay. What condition is she in?
While I agree with this entirely sometimes they dont quite get enough if they dont eat the weight they need. My tbs often couldnt/wouldnt eat huge volumes of hay so were topped up with concentrated grass feeds if they needed more weight

Absolutely agree with you 100%. But I’d want to give more hay first, rather than increase the bucket feed (as op seems to imply wanting to do).

allen and page calm and condition or fast fibre, both contain pre and pro biotics and linseed get the guts working well to put on the weight
