25K + For a horse

[ QUOTE ]
What was the insurance on Barbaro? Would have been horrendous.

Insurance for racehorses is generally 10% + agents fee a year. Death only.

Horses are horses, most of the barstewards I ride are worth in excess of that and you just have to forget what they are worth. Expecially when the owners just paid 1M or more for a yearling which you are then breaking in and has a bit of an 'accident'. Thankfully most people who own horses worth that much have the money for the vets bills too regardless of insurance, much like people with expensive cars.

Oh! My lad was under £2,000 with tack and rugs and to me I treat him as though he was £20,000! I wrap him in hoards of "cotton wool", fret that its too hot, or its too cold, or it might rain etc. He is loved. Thats it. xx

i dread to think what the premium would be!!! reckon you would need to re-mortgage just to afford the premium never mind what excess they would ask for!!!!

Tell me about it

Ditto! I could buy a perfectly nice pony for the cost of my boy's annual insurance premium!

And yes, he does get wrapped in cotton wool a bit, but that's because I'm soft, not just cos he's valuable. He certainly gets turned out (alone, but that's because he's a stallion). One training yard I was considering for him told me he was 'far too valuable to be allowed out'. Needless to say, I didn't send him to that yard.

My ex boss, an Olympic dressage rider, turned her Grand Prix horse out everyday
smile.gif

He was out in a massive field with one other really elderly horse. I did have to go and check him every 5 mins, and if he started galloping about I had to go and catch him and get him in.

I could never justify spending £25k+ on a horse unless I was a millionaire. But if I did it would be treated the same, can't be doing with wrapping them up in cotton wool just because they're expensive.

Really? Even if he was just in high spirits, you had to bring him in?

See, that's what makes me sad. The poor horse has a big price tag and can't be allowed to have fun. Barmey!

do you want a lovely 15.2 bay mare to keep your boy happy?!?!!?!?
grin.gif

[/ QUOTE ]

Don't tempt me! I'm sure he wouldn't say no lol! But he's got about 25 mares already booked in his first season at stud (6 or so already in foal), so he can't really complain!

Eventually, I would ideally like to have him running out with his own little herd of mares. But that's a long way off at the moment, as he is my only horse!
wink.gif

He's only allowed out in a relatively small paddock, cos he's a speed-junkie and goes waaay too fast and risks injury in a larger field. He gets up to terrifying speeds even in the sand-school. The stud have tried putting up obstacles to make him slow down - like traffic-calmers - but he just plays slalom-racing in and out of them - with a lot of flying changes and handbrake turns... Daft little horse - I do love him!

Do anyone else's stallions have toys in their stables? Mine has a horseball - he's completely trashed and shredded it, but his favourite game is to grab it in his teeth, stand bolt upright on his hind legs and box at it with his front feet - like a boxer with a punch-bag! It seems to keep him amused, so I'm wondering what other toys he might like?

Whoops - sorry - I got muddled and thought i was on another thread - the one about how we keep stallions on the Breeding forum. Sorry about the off-topic digression...

Hes not a stallion, but we have one who has a ball thingy witha handle on it. He was gelded late, and was a rig, so is till quite colty. His favourite trick is to pick it up by the handle and chuck it at people as they walk past the stable.
Almost stops him shredding rugs.

I agree, and they wonder why so many competition horses are either screwed up in the head, or just blow their tops.

It's all very well and good saying you would treat them the same, and rightly so! TBH they are not treated the same, as what we are all forgetting is the vital correlation between the purchase price of the wonderhorse and (IME) the wonderhorses ability to injure itself.

I think it could be the inbreeding

Put it this way - devil pony that gets passed from pillar to post, always re-advertised as free to (any) home, would take 6 fully grown men, 4 shotguns, 15tonnes of ragwort and a cannon, before showing any signs of becoming remotely sick or sorry or remotely unlevel.
Wonderhorse however "Ahh, I spy zis rabbithole, maybe it vill go to china, i vill put my hoof down it to investigate." "OOOoohh, Zat barbed vire looks soooooo shiny..."

lol

I'm not kidding, once I had to bring him in because he was looking up
confused.gif

and another time he was walking to the water trough and Bar came running out of her house calling me to get him in!!!

It was one of the reasons I left........

It was dreadful, like I said, it was one of the reasons I left!
I was so stressed my hair started falling out
frown.gif

It's a shame really, that would have been the best job in the world if it wasn't for her!!!
tongue.gif

he would like bracken in his stable to keep him amused!!!
grin.gif
shes got no back shoes on and she is such a tart that he wouldnt get chance to run round as he would be shakin in the corner!!!!!
blush.gif
give me shout when his harem is set up and will give bracken directions and she will take herself there when i tell her there is a sexy man waitin at the other end!!!
grin.gif

lol brackenhappy - she might be a bit big for a 'stable-toy'!

Although actually he's got a ginormous stable - it's so big he can canter round it, so as a remedy for his adrenalin-junkie tendencies putting Bracken in there might not work, but I'm sure he'd be happy!
wink.gif

But back to the main topic - I suppose I do mollycoddle him a bit, but it really isn't because of his price-tag: he's my only horse (and my 'dream-horse') and I love him so I don't want him to get hurt.
