I'm doing a 2ft 6" hunter trial tomorrow, only our second attempt at a 2'6 xc course, so feeling a bit nervous, but a bit excited too  I have walked the course and it isn't too bad, but there are a couple that I didn't like the look of:

this ditch (can't remember the last time i jumped a ditch ) to a palisade - eek!

and this rail (typically fence 13 ) which has quite a wide gravel filled base that you can't really see:

So any advice, words of encouragement gratefully received :)

be positive!! looks like it will ride nice and at least the ditch has an attractive palisade afterwards, your horse should have its eye on that which means less time to think about the ditch if you ride forward doubt he will even notice it :) personally i would ride the ditch at an angle to get a nice line to the palisade but if your boy isnt to keen on ditches just take it on a nice curve and try and stay balanced. re the rails one of those psychological things looks terrifying to us your horse will no doubt skip over it :D good luck and let us know how it goes!!!! x

It looks like a lovely course from what you have shown us, well built fences. Your worries are at ground level. Look up to the next fence and you won't see them, nor will your horse feel the apprehension that you would transmit as you will not be looking at them. Hope that makes sense and that you enjoy the day. Look up!

I am sure you will be fine, just remember to breathe, look ahead to where you are going, dont look down at the ditches, and think and ride positively.

Have a great time and I will look out for your post tomorrow.

Good Luck and enjoy. :D

looks like it will ride nicely :) be confident if you feel nervous coming to a fence take a deep breath sit back and wrap your leg round and remember to keep riding! Usually I would jump the ditch at an angle to be square to the palisade, however as the palisade is so lovely inviting and wide with a hedge on the "drop out" side I would probably take it on a nice curve. The other fence make sure you dont look down into the gravel area; treat it like a handy ground pole ensuring you dont get too close to the rails :). and of course most importantly have fun & let us know how you get on! :D

Are there flags at the ditch - didn't look like it in the photo - if not, don't need to jump it.

Sit up and kick on - be very positive and you will have fun!

Good luck!

BonneMaman - if only that were the case, I cropped the picture before I put it on here and unf it is def flagged 4A and you can just see the palisade is B. Did have a double check, thought for a moment i'd got a get out then :D

becca1305 - glad you added the perfectly jumpable bit :D

yeh it looks like it will ride nicely I wouldnt worry :) maybe its just the angle its taken at making it look quite broad but the size really doesnt matter as long as you dont let it :p. good luck sure you will be fine :D
