any suggestions on what i could feed my old timer? he's 14hh and 26yrs old and had a bout of laminitis last year but is over that for the meantime, i hav him on happy hoof and speedibeet which is good for laminitics but his coat is horrendously dry and itchy, can anyone suggest any supplements or anything which would put some condition back into his skin and coat without putting on weight.

We use cider vinegar and our 2 oldies look fantastic on it. They are beginning to malt and it hasn't ever affected his laminitis.
It doesn't cost alot and isn't complicating their feeds too much.
 
TopSpec anti lam. The lami pony I look after is fed happy hoof, high fibre nuts and TopSpec anti lam. Give them a call. Don't think you should feed lamanitics cider vinegar!
 
Hi Fairdown. I have a 22 year old gelding who had dropped a lot of weight due to depression and stress at my previous so-called full livery yard. I have now moved him to a wonderful DIY yard where he is happy and healthy and his coat is so glossy you can see your face in it! The key is Mollichaff Veteran Chaff. It is fabulous stuff that smells so good and minty you want to eat it yourself! Every single horse on our yard would scoff the whole bag if possible! But amazingly it is only a little higher in calories than Hi Fi Lite - it's oat straw based with almost no molasses but a light coating of oil. Added mint, herbs, vits and mins and antioxidants. He gets ad lib haylage and 2 bowl feeds of Veteran Chaff made damp with sloppy wet speedibeet and he wolfs every feed down like his life depends on it. No fizz. No problems at all. But he's regained all the weight he lost and, as I said, is positively glowing with health. I'd recommend it to anyone!
 
I use dodson and horrell safe and sound on my pony which is fine for laminitics and includes all the vits, mins etc needed, Tinkers coat is the best its ever been and im not even at the end of my first bag yet!!
 
M_M We have fed Cider vinegar with our vets blessing for many years now. And have had no problem with it at all. If anything it has helped their digestive system along with mobility.
 
We use dengi alfa beet, safe and sound and spiller high fibre cubes for our 37 year old laminitic. I think that the Alfalfa in the alfa beet has helped her put on weight. She lost loads of weight last year when struck down with Laminitus and it is only since getting her to eat the alfa beet that she has picked up weight. Her coat is great - when you can see it for mud! And she is feeling good to - off up the field at high speed.

The lami pony whom I look after owner was told by the vet NOT to feed cider vinegar.
I feed my own oldie CV and think ts fab stuff
