If there are people willing to buy this mare, why not phone up the vendor and ask how much she will take. Point out that she will have to pay transport, and commission if she goes to auction. Also a fist full of cash is often useful.

Then the poor thing won't have to go through the trauma of the auction ring.

Just wait until you have her safe and loaded and on your way out before saying what you really think about someone who would do this to an elderly horse.
 
You might try approaching the auctioneers office. They wouldn't like it much, but they have had the entrance fee, and it wouldn't be very good publicity for them to let this mare go through the auction ring. They could get in touch with the vendor and then back to the possible purchaser so it would remain anon.
