Going to need a saddler out in the next couple days to fit new horse with a saddle. I'm looking for a leather GP/event saddle, don't mind what brand really, preferable a couple of years old. How much would I be looking at spending?

What size are you looking for? We may have a GP 16.5" which was used for everything by my sister on her old pony last year- she competed up to 1.15m...

Thats a bit like asking how much is a second hand car! You can get one for £100 or £1000, it depends on the quality of leather and flocking, workmanship and condition of the saddle. Obviously the more you can spend the likelihood of it being in better condition, etc increases.

Just make sure you check the flocking is even, soft and not lumpy. Many horses are asymetrical, so flocking will reflect this and it may not match your horse and flocking goes hard with time, particularly if it is synthetic. A saddle with poor flocking can do so much damage even if the tree is right for the horse. If it has an adjustable tree or has been changed from its stamped width make sure that the tree is even and not bent more one side than the other. Also check the condition of the girth straps as it will cost money to have them changed if they are worn.

I asked a woman in a garden centre what garlic grew from once! A few seconds later it dawned on me and i felt like a right prat!
