A good friend of mine had a bad experience recently with a horse bought for her daughter (just coming off ponies). Great when tried but went vertical 1st time on at home. Anyway, horse went back but she was reluctant to look at others.

Found a mare she and her daughter adored - failed the vet on flexion test :( They were gutted but seller said no way is horse lame, passed 6 months prior and hunted every week with no probs. He offered that she have horse for weeks free trial and he would pay for her vet to retest and if she failed he would collect her.

She didn't put a foot wrong all week and passed vetting - vet was made aware of previous failure. So just a positive post really, good on seller for being persistant! :)

Glad they got a second vetting :)

I take flexion tests with a pinch of salt. A horse can fail one day but pass the next. It can depend on many things: the vet, how long the leg is held for, the surface, the weather, maybe the horse can be slightly stiff after standing in all day etc. Some horses that may fail slightly on a flexion may have probably never had a lame day and never will. Even many vets have said to me how subjective vettings can be.

My horse failed his vetting on a flexion test over 5 years ago. He hasn't ever been lame in all that time! But insurers still wouldn't cover him due to the faint possiblity of a spavin!!

Always good to hear a positive post with a happy ending and of course flexion tests always open to query. Glad this turned out well for all concerned.
