Basically I let my horse get on with it.
I do molly coddle more in the winter tho

my horse is a big young thing that competes regularly, that struggles to keep weight on, having him shivering or starved out when its p*ssing it down or windy is not ideal, especially when he gets 5 bags of feed forced down his throat everyday. So no not quite wrapped up in cotton wool... grrr

Also if I want to ride and its raining, why cant I throw a light rain sheet on him...
 
Depends on the horse really, my old Highland would have been letf to fend for himself in all weather conditions but he has permafat and a double layer coat to keep him dry and warm.

My fine Egytian Arab on the other hand would most definitely be stood shaking if it rained, fine if it only lasts an hour or so but any longer and she'll stop eating and can colic due to tension. So I'd be reaching for the cotton wool for her. I keep a rain sheet on most nights and it comes off during the day if it sunny, don't mind drying her off to re rug in the evening if needs be.
 
i let both my horses get on with it in any weather, unless it is really extreme + they are asking to come in, in which case ill put them in thier stables or if i deem it dangerous.
 
Ask me in Winter and I would give totally different answers

for now thought they have to stay out and put up with what ever the weather throws at them!

Very good point! Our race horses do come in in bad weather but that is because they are very fine, fit, expensive animals who cost allot of time and money to keep in good condition.

I dont think your going to get very true answers to this poll due to the way the answer available are worded.
 
depends on the weather, temperature, amount of time he's out, his condition, time of year, what work he's in, how he feels....

for example, what do you do if you turn up at the yard, and it's sunny, you cant come back for another ... 8hrs but in a few hours its supposed to rain, heavily and go very cold. Nobody can bring your horse in for you....

First 2 questions - no probs, but when it's windy that's different. Star had squamous cell carcinoma on her eye 18 months ago and the wind causes her eyeball to become inflamed and dried. So yes - when it's windy, I'm watching the weather, and making sure she wears her Guardian Mask!!

Just out of interest really. I've always kept mine as natural as possible - even the old ex- tb race horse. My horses were stabled for a solid 2 months last winter because of the psychotic farm owner and it was awful for them and me! I have since moved to a 5 acre field with shelter thank god. I have never had any experience with competition horses though -the most I've done is clear round jumping at local shows when I was 14 lol Plus I suppose clipped horses are treated very differently aswell in colder climates.

Just people go on about "horses being natural" blah blah blah no rugs, dont trim, rubbish. Just annoys me abit really!!! Apparantly a horse isnt happy if its not naked and hairy. Believe me you havent seen a happy horse until you see Ruperts face when I go into the feed room! (must know he's getting his bags of feed

raining they get a lightweight on. windy condition well it depends if the sun is glaring then flyrug but if it is peeing with rain the lightweight.

mine aren't wrapped up in cottenwool but they are well cared for and don't need for anything (well my mare could do with a brain but that can't be helped
