Just wonder if anyone else's young boys have/had what seem like tantrums? My boys reaction has always been to rear and I've been told its a young boy thing several times. But I've noticed a theme recently. When I've walked him out or just back to the field he try's to eat grass, I never let him and he starts playing up. Luckily the rears are not vertical anymore but he starts trying to go up. I've found I can stop him going up now but he seems to turn towards me and tries it on like he's annoyed because he's not allowed to eat

Afraid not!

One of our 2 year old colts is slightly more prone to 'front footage', but he's had much less handling than the rest of them, so not really fair of me to label him as colt-ish.

IMO horses don't have "tantrums" but they are constantly trying the pecking order to move up.......12' lead ropes give you a lot better chance of coming out on top!! But play fair with him!!! You can do plenty of other things to prove your superiority other than giving him a whack!! He who moves his feet loses.....so teach him hindquarter yield, backwards, forehand yield, backwards etc....and when he starts to try and assert his dominance you move his hooves......as lightly as possible, but as firm as necessary.....do less sooner.....These are all so important...Good luck.

Is typical colt behaviour. Colts rear, fillies kick. If you watch them together this is all they do!

Agree, that they shouldn't be doing it with bosswoman, so hope you get that sorted soon!

Colts rear, fillies kick.

Not IME, all three of my girls rear (the old TB still walks along on her hind legs sometimes, like she did as a foal) but the boy doesn't rear or kick, he will nip though - little sod.

ETA, when he rears, send him briskly forwards.

Trust you to come in with the exceptions!! :p:D

That's because I chose them all very carefully - I wouldn't want a well behaved predictable horse, that would just be too easy. :p ;)

Lots of potential here...

quality control...

How rude. Can't you recognise a quality animal when you see one? They aren't plugs* you know, these are potential stunt horses!

;) :p :D

* I still don't get the whole 'plug' thing - I thought that plugs were something to do with sinks. ;) Is it a typo and the person who wrote it really meant to put plod?
