Just had my p/b arab Rio gelded 16 days ago due to his coltish behaviour and yard policy, his behaviour is better but needs to be turned out to chill and calm down vet said wait 7-10 days but I waited 14 as field mixed mares and geldings.1 fell gelding 1 r/p filly 1 coloured p/b filly and sec c gelding 5 yr old all mine in the field along with an older approx 8 yr old r/p mare belonging to another livery. When I turned him out Friday my sec c gelding was attrocious with him charging at him very aggresivley (he is rather friendly with the older mare in particular) keeping him away from the others even though Rio wasnt even trying to get near them and continuously running him around the field. After hours of this behaviour I decided enough was enough Rio was stressed pacing along the fence and circling at the gate so i went to get him.As I arrived at the gate the older mare was coming to Rio at the gate she had left all the others right at the top of the field she was very obviously in season and was constantly shoving herself in his face ( im sure i dont need to explain in detail
)hes never covered so didnt know what she wanted he was creeping to her and then trying to feed off her but she persisted with a vengance and eventually the penny dropped he covered her. I didnt see any fluid come from him only her after he got off she just cantered back up the field to the others I was bloody gobsmacked at what Id just seen it was so obvious what she had come over for!!!! I took Rio out the field and he stayed in until today when i tried him alone in field with my sec c they were ok until I introduced my coloured filly and then he was off again charging at him so I brought my sec c out this time and then put all the rest in which was reasonably ok apart from the older mare again as soon as she went through the gate she was off again and again he covered her!!!Now to be fair to my Rio he wasnt interested its all the mare but Im obviously concerned in case he could be fertile still even though the vet had said he wouldnt be also I dont want him to become one of those geldings that thinks he can mount any mare in season now hes done it,and I dont want him to become attached to this mares which knowing my luck he will or we will probably have behaviour problems again .Also I dont want to have to keep my sec c in his stable indefinatley as hes usually quite a good boy Im presuming he still thinks Rios a colt like the bloody tarty mare does. Im hoping someone as some ideas and can answer my questions especially the fertility one also bare in mind I am on a livery yard so not a lot of flexibility really . Thanks for reading
