BACKED AND BEING RIDDEN BY A CHILD

Littlefoot (reg final tribute) is a little dream of a pony. Since birth she has been handled daily by the youngest of children.

She has been backed by my 5yo daughter, and will happily sat on round the school, or down the lane.

She has a true world class showing pedigree. Her full siblings (older) are currently competing successfully at the very highest standards and level of showing, and her Dam and Sires records speak for them selves.

A true fine and refined type. She boasts an exquisite head, perfect conformation, and is a real star in her very own right. She also shows a natural talent and love for jumping, and wow can she pick her legs up!

Her NPS reg has been submitted and she will make 12.2hh. A real kind and genuine pony who is very much loved. Only for sale as we are being forced to downsize

MUST GO TO A GENUINE AND VERY LOVING HOME ONLY. She will be very sadly missed. She will be an exceptional, well bred and stunning childs pony. More pics to follow shortly

The link to the advert (no, I didn't make it up!).

I know it's difficult to gain perspective without a person in the shot but that looks much bigger to me - almost a baby TB!

For someone who sounds so knowledgeable what on earth are they doing putting 5 yr olds on 2 yr old pony?

It looks like it will grow into one of those very pretty but very fine legged show ponies to me.

If they have not ruined those very fine legs, very fine spine and it's young mind it could turn out to be a super pony in the future. It just needs a better owner and turning away (with proper handling etc..) for two years!

They are lucky that the pony is quiet, why would you risk the life of your child like that?

I bought my pony when he was 22 months and it was stated that he was broken and hacking out on the road in the advert. Was an idiot woman with hundreds of horrid kids punching my pony : ( don't know what's wrong with people she obviously thought they was the way to sell him. I saw one of her kids come flying off a shetland that was being lunged in furious tight circles by one of her other horrors. Oh well natural selection and all that........

When I was selling my rising 2yr old dartmoor colt I must have had (no exageration) 10 people asking me if he was broken-in. I obvioulsy told them no and informed them that he was too young to be broken in. No doubt tho they would eventually have found someone willing enough to break in a 2 yr old for them.

TBH, I think it depends on how 'broken' it is. If it has been well handled and is calm, I don't see much harm in sitting a small child on the pony for a few mins.

We 'broke' a pony to ride as a 5yo, except that it wasn't really that hard, the owners kids had been getting on him bareback in the field since he was a youngster. Not saying I'd do it (but then plenty of people on here do stuff I wouldn't do ;) ) but the pony we 'broke' is still going strong in his mid teens, so can't have done him too much harm. :)

I saw a worse ad than that! The 2yr old had been ridden by an (admittedly small) adult when accompanying the 5yr old child out on the road! Sorry, can't remember where I saw it, so can't post a link.
Ditto Stencilface, possibly the wording is misleading, if the child has just been popping on and off the pony. Think if it had been my pony I might have waited until pony was 3 to allow that tho'. Many breeders etc get foals used to being leant against in preparation for backing.

I think the scary thing is that they are selling this as a childs pony, I can just see the novice parents turning up and expecting their child to manage a two year old :(

no harm in handling it a lot, getting it used to children, and perhaps 'starting' it (hate the term 'breaking'

once its started though, get it turned away for a year, maybe two, and let it fill out a little bit and strengthen those little legs as much as it can!!!

looks very scraggy to be honest, although well looked after?

Could all be a load of rubbish. There is no picture of the little girl on the pony. If they feel that is such a strong selling point then you would think they would advertise with a picture of this???

They aren't just popping the child on it for a little sit on the pony though. They state in the advert that it is ridden in the menage and down the lane (small child on 2yr old pony plus traffic!).

The photo could have been taken a couple of months ago, but look at it's pasterns, it reallt doesn't need the extra weight! It is 'to make 12.2hh' so it will not be very big at all.

I know that people do back 2yr olds but it doesn't make it right physiologically.

The advert also states 'perfect confirmation'.....erm,no.....not at the moment. Those pasterns terrify me!!

Also states a passion for jumping.....at two. Poor thing. :(

Google the phone number and you find another horse for sale..one of the pics shows it being lunged over a fixed gate and another ad where the owner describes himself as a professional

I think she looks thin, her feet are a funny shape, and she looks a bit stunned. I like to see two year olds with a bit of wool on them, enjoying their childhood.
Mind you, same applies to 5yo kids.
