Just bought a 2 year old. iron grey gelding, is about 15.0hh or 15.1hh. his name is lyndell solitude out of wolfstan lonestar and solitaire XIV. he is a registerd ISH but his father is a salle france and his mom arabx something lol. father was 16.2 and mother about 14.3/15.00. just wondering how much u think he will grow? and if any of you have late developers or horses who have had growth spurts late.

Most make at least as big as their dam and then according to the sire another inch or two. It really is a guessing game however, as even siblings can come out totally different from one year to the next. We have William aged two who is bigger now than his three year old brother..
I would guess on a finishing height for your chap of 15.3 h 16 hh

My 2 yr old was 16.2 on his second birthday mid July. He met his 3 yr old full sister at the Hunter Championships in September and he was a smidgen bigger. Mum is a good 17hh and dad is 16.2. I reckon he will be bigger than both of them. Maternal gransire was 18.2 apparently. Now I'm worried.

My 5yo WB grew at least 4 inches in the last 18 months, and I had an ISH a few years ago who grew nearly 2 inches in her 6th year. A friend had a horse who they insisted grew 3 inches as a 7yo.
How big do you hope your 2yo will make?

Now don't laugh - but htis works! An old boy in yorkshire told me this years ago and it has worked every time!

Get an old broom handle or some other kind of straight long stick. Measure the distance from the centre of the fetlock joint to the point of his elbow. mark this on the stick. Then put the bottom of the stick on the point of his elbow and the mark you made at the top of the stick will be the height his withers will be when he matures. ie if it is 6" above where his withers are now then he'll grow another 6"

I bought a 3 year old at just touching 15.3, he's now 5 and about 16.3. The ID blood means he may grow slowly and steadily and top off late, so I'd think you will almost certainly get 15.2+

At what age does this method work?
Someone told me if you measure the fetlock to knee joint of a week old foal the distance in inches is the height they will make in hands- I didnt mention it earlier cos it wouldnt be a lot of help with a 2yo anyway and Im not convinced it would be any more accurate than an educated guess from the parents height!
