Went for a hack today on Tess, mum was with us on the bike all three of us are wrapped up in bright yellow Hi-viz so it's not like we are easy to miss. Well twelve drivers passed us and I counted only three slowed down for us :( Its a straight, long road and sadly people go like the clappers up there despite it being a typical Fen wonky road. One person must have gone past at 60mph possibly 65... and waved to me ?! Luckily Tess is great with traffic but that doesn't mean i appreciate drivers blasting past us.

Only a few weeks ago i had to flap my arms like a bird to get an arctic lorry to slow down, he took up the entire lane and was coming towards us bobbing over the bumps at around 40mph, wouldn't of minded but my whip could easily touch the side of the lorry. He looked rather angry at both me and my sister for holding them up a few seconds

I always say thank you to people, if i cant wave its a big nod of the head and a cheesy 'thanks grin'. There is no off road hacking near us and i mean non, no bridal paths etc. So we have to go on the roads, perhaps the next investment is a big flashing sign :)

I have this problem too sometimes. Living in the countryside, most people do slow down but there's always a few who blast past and think they own the road. It really annoys me. I always make sure I crawl past horses when I'm driving because you never know which horses will spook and which won't. People are so inconsiderate!

about half the people seem to slow down when i'm out hacking on country lanes, when on main roads 9/10 slow down. I don't know why they are worse on country lanes, I've had people pip at me before and whizz by at super speed! As I mentioned before, someone once sped by, then pulled up and shouted abuse at me while I was leading a 7 year old girl out on my pony, I looked him straight in the face and asked him how he would feel if the pony had spooked and he'd killed a 7 year old girl and a pony.

Every car that passed me today slowed down, this is a combination of main roads and rat run country lanes that seem to be infested with gardens full of dogs that jump up and bark as you go past - so lucky cars do slow down! Might get one a week that is a bit of an idiot.

Well that's not great if only a quarter of the drivers you met had the common sense to slow down for you. Luckily I hardly do any roadwork now, and if I do it's by choice, but in the days when I did used to do ride on the roads, I think the majority of drivers did used to slow down for me. I did used to get the odd nutter flying past and once my daughter was nearly taken out by an Ocado delivery van.

It would only literally add seconds onto their journey time to drive past horses slowly and with care. I think some people just see a horse on the road in front of them as a nuisance and something they just went to get past as quickly as possible.

I think it's an achievement if a driver goes past at an consistent speed! And I always thank them just for that!!! I would much rather someone goes past at 40/50mph consistently without reving the engine or slamming on the brakes.......rather than someone rushing up behind, slowing suddenly, then speeding off, I always find this more upsetting and confusing!

May be I'm just use to fast drivers as I hack straight onto a main road.....

I was quite lucky today. Most poeple don't expect to see a 30" horses on the road and always slow down to gawp :D
