firstly sorry if its been asked before but can you even if you have passed your test after 1997? thanks for any help... or is there any box you can drive without doing the test?

I think you can drive anything upto 3.5 tonnes with a normal licence but traffic police are really tightening up on it. If you were driving two 16.2hh horses in the back and you were stopped and taken to a public weighbridge and your whole load came to more that 3.5 tonnes, they can take your vehicle off you.
Therefore, if you buy a small horse lorry, always be aware of your weight because there are a lot of people being stopped at the moment and sometimes these lorries can weigh upto 3 tonnes with living etc so have to be careful

Theaults, I understand, typically have a 1.1 tonne payload. I've only carried one big horse in one.

I passed my test in 1997. I drive a 3.5ton lorry with 1 horse onboard. I am taking my test to drive anything above that then I will be able to drive up to 17 ton.

If you passed after 1997 you can't drive with a trailer without taking your trailer test. Its a swizz. Its £900 to take your LGV then about £400 for your trailer test!!

It is true the DSA are cutting down on weights, not just the kerb weight but the weight over each axle. You also must carry the horses passports whenever they are in the lorry - I take photocopies not sure whether thats legal??
