3.5 ton horseboxes

Make sure you look at the weight as its easy to go over with big horses, also they may start getting cheeper again as you can apply for your 3.5t to 7.5t licence from 18 now instead of 21

I love mine! It was a professional conversion (I would never buy a 'home job'), and one of my musts was ensuring that the bulkhead between horse and driver is reinforced. It's side load and Genie travels BEAUTIFULLY in it.

I have a weighbridge certificate showing it has a 1.25t payload, which is enough for Genie (15hh chunky Welsh D), tack, water, etc, and me! Could probably take a mini or a tiny pony as well, but nothing bigger.

Mine was converted by Bonnington Horseboxes, and I do like the conversion. I'm not so keen on the IW containers on top of a van chassis... too high and unstable for my liking (or at least they appear that way!)

Theaults are lovely and a bit roomier for bigger horses . Well padded inside and I prefer the door/ramp set up as there is nothing over the horses head so better for nervy horses. Also the door at the back is large enough for a horse to get out if they decide to jump over the breast bar - from a saftey point of view its something that doesn't seem to be thought about in many other 3.5t

not cheap

but they do occasionally come up second hand . I'll ask the owner of the one I steal and try not to give back when I next see him.

HI. I gave up the second hand search after having several boxes checked, and found most to have major repairs needed- alot of expense on top of purchase price which was already at the top of my budget.
In the end,I had my one coach built, for much the same cost as I was looking at second hand. I had looked at boxes about the £9k mark, which was mostly ones that were p/r/s/t registration. However, I then looked into it further, and found if you went to a builder of these little boxes, he can build one for only a little bit more.
I now am the proud owner of an 05 reg, 3.5t coachbuilt box. It was built in Wales, and cost just £9800, earlier this year. The builder has now put his prices up to about £12500 on a similar age chassis.
the paylod is 900kg, but as I only travel one horse weighing 580kg, that is fine. I could have had it uprated for £350, and then it would carry 1200kg, but it was another expense for something I don;t need. The build is superb, but I have had only a basic interior day living done, with just 2 seats, and an open storage area with saddle racks rather than cupboards and outside tack lockers which I didn't need. It has a steel floor, covered in wood and rubber matting on top, window from cab to look at the hroses and barn style doors on the ramp, which I wanted as I dislike the lift up ones in case the horse did go up whilst loading, and hit his head.I can't upload any pics but if anyone wants to see, pm me and I can text a pic to you.

Forgot to say, my box has 7'8" headroom, so is ideal for taller horses, too.
The only thing I would say to anyone considering one of these boxes, is try and get one with an engine of 2.5 or more, and 6 gears if possible as that all helps with the payload and easier driving.Mine is a 2.2 and I do think it would struggle with 2 horses in it (if uprated) up hills, as the power isn't there. We live in quite a hilly area, and mine is fine with just my one horse, but I think a bigger engine and gearbox would definately help if you want to carry a full payload. Of course, the initial outlay would be abit more, so if you're on a budget with just one horse, the 2.2 is fine.
