Long time lurker first time poster 😊 I no there are loads of the threads about 3.5 ton lorries but non really answer my questions
I'm looking into getting a new build with at least 1100kg payload for my one horse to travel in
I'm going to see a company tomorrow but uncertain on what the best materials are mainly for the flooring and the the bulk head between drivers and horse.
I ideally want it completely enclosed as u don't want any chance of the horse getting over any breast bar- any other features that are good to have? Unsure on outside tack lockers although they would be more convenient are they safe??

My 3.5t has a payload of 1200kg.
Mine isn't completely enclosed though as that'll reduce the payload, it's got an emergency exit, should anything happen, but touch wood, mine is quiet to travel :)
Anything like tack lockers will add extra weight. Mine has 2 bridle hooks and 2 saddle racks.
I'm very cautious with weights etc, mine is 14.2 and if anything else comes in with me, it must be smaller and their tack needs to go separately to ensure I'm not putting added pressure on the engine.

You'll be lucky to get a 1100kg payload with a full wall and lockers..... I have 1250kg on a new build with a normal half front wall (emergency exit one) and no lockers :)

Flooring, aluminium planking is the norm.

Bulkhead is their call, you want to be looking for a steel or alloy tube "frame", panelled in alloy or a GRP/ply (or honeycomb) laminate.

There are various collapsible breast bar systems, or you could go for a stallion box without breast bar..

Outside lockers will increase weight a bit but not hugely. Safety depends on how they protrude into the horse area. Opinions vary......

Ask their advice and ask them if they will warrant a weight with a certain level of equipment......

If they'll put their proposals on paper, that's a good start.

References from other clients pretty vital too...although if they're a start-up, absence of those is explicable, everyone deserves a chance....just a sign to be careful and ask (very) searching questions! Don't let them distract you with pretty pictures of leather seats and piano black dash!

Non-reinforced is just a frame round the edges and a flat panel in the middle. A proper bulkhead has bars or tube across as well. But there's reinforcement and reinforcement and no industry standard. So you have to trust the builder.

I have a one horse 3.5 tonne, with stallion partition, and a small living in the back. The "spare" side has a 4 ft wide and 5 ft high tack locker, plus a toilet compartment/ rug store.

Mine does have less payload, but only because I loaded it up with extras, as it did not matter to me as I was up-rating to 3.9 tonne anyway.

They have also crash tested their reinforced bulkhead, as well as having European type approval.

The ones I like the look of is the inside is the equi trek sonics. Although Ive heard thee builds arnt particularly good and they only build on new vechicals so are completely out of my budget

With Red1 (tho it's not only Bloomfields who build good boxes).

If you have to take a C! test, is £1000 or less such a huge amount in the great money drain which is horse ownership? It even gives you the option to buy a 7.5T....

Thanks, scarily I've had mine for years. O/H bought it from a dealer but it was already converted and I have no idea. I did ask at the time and was told yes it was all done correctly but had slight reservations.
